Alright so I bought a cheap Maverick at a pawn shop last night and I am going to chop it up and make it a home defender.

My question to you guys is:  What should I do as far as mods to this little hummer?

KISS is what I'm going for.

No pistol grip suggestions please.

I can try for picks after work tonight.

I love mine runs sweet , just looking for a short barrel and pull the plug . debating on a slug barrel with irons or trying to find a breacher .

Midway currently has the factory (Hecho in Mehico , but from US Steel) 18.5" cylinder-bore, bead-sighted on sale.  Price is $74.  Jump on it!

Poor-man's method is a hacksaw at both ends of the gun.  Chop the barrel to 18.5" and knock 1" off of the stock.  These cuts will of course require some cleanup.  The barrel is going to need a new front sight and possibly may not pattern worth a darn.  Maybe.  If not find someone with a forcing cone reamer and see if that helps the pattern.  The shortened stock will require fitting a new, smaller pad.  You can re-fit the old pad but it's gonna be ugly.  I also swapped in a complete 500 fore end with action bars to make it feel like my other 500s.  That farking trigger still sucks though and the safety is in the worst position EVAR!

What should you do?

Sell it

Chop the barrel to 18"-20", add a light, and a method of holding more ammo. Done.

This.

I still have the stock forend on my Mav 88, and it's still great, but if you your building an HD weapon I'd swap forends. That barrel is super cheap, I've never seen a shotgun barrel of any type NIB for less than $100.

I subscribe to this method as often as possible. That's the plan to start with, if I FUBAR the whole thing then I will order that barrel. That is a sweet deal. Thanks for the heads up.

As for the pad thing, I will probably just put a plate on there (yeah its gonna hurt like hell, I know).

I happen to like the safety where it is though, that's why I picked it over the standard 500. That safety just doesn't do it for me at all.

ETA: oh yeah, and I shot it and it runs like a Mossberg should.

I just ordered one of those 18.5" barrels from Midway....seems like a good deal.  If anyone doesn't see this in time to catch the sale, just FYI, the Official  Mossberg Web Site sells the same barrel for $81 and change.

Thanks for the heads up!  Appreciate it!
