Disclaimer: This is not a joke. I work at a gun shop in Commiefornia. Without saying too much, this is a project we did for a very high level Law Enforcement agent.
It was, at one point in its life, an M38 Mosin Nagant. This is what we've done to it, all by specific requests from the client, despite protests by myself and our head gunsmith. First: Timney Trigger. Yes, a Timney on a Mosin http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/284387_1479237678376_1756802446_688603_3046445_n.jpg Next, a no-name muzzle brake that the customer brought in himself: http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/184009_1479237518372_1756802446_688602_3550280_n.jpg A "Rock Solid" mount, and Nikon optic http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/281476_1479237278366_1756802446_688601_3571765_n.jpg Had to melt and bend the bolt handle to get it to clear the optic/mount, of course. http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/284491_1479237958383_1756802446_688605_2641788_n.jpg And here's the kicker: Not only did the client ask for the barrel to be free-floated, but he wanted his custom stock to be pillar-bedded as well, which we did for him... http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/281291_1479238198389_1756802446_688607_375376_n.jpg And no, this is not photoshopped http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/285432_1479249358668_1756802446_688612_6827346_n.jpg |

Labor came out to $430 but I have no idea how much the parts cost because he brought them all in himself.
We told him to let us know how it shoots, so I'll let you know if he lets us know. But ya, the whole point is that he could have got himself a better rifle from the factory for much less money, and we actually did tell him that before we did any work. |

Remington 700 in 308 would beat the ass off this gun for less money and have better available ammo supply and better resale. I guess that is the point of your post I wouldn't be so sure about that. My sporter Mosin with a perfect bore, 23" barrel, re-crowned, Timney trigger, bedded/free floated, 4x32 scout scope with handloads will do an inch at 100 yards. With a 12x scope I bet it would be well under sub MOA. |

i could see doing the work on a mosin if you were an apprentice/hobbyist gunsmith and wanted some practice. but for $530 + dollars you could easily get into a nice 700 or savage. however i like my 91/30 as is ,Stock!!! and i can treat it like the dirty whore it is and not worry about abusing a $100 fun gun. Mine shoots about 3 inch groups at 100yrds with cheap surplus ammo an open sights. |

It would not be my first choice for this type of project being a Mauser whore, but it looks like you guys fixed all the things I hate about Mosins. (except the ugly)
I like minimal mods and the video nutnfancy did on the Mosin. Very much in it's element. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eqG5GJRies |

Not saying it can't be done , just that it is the hard way Mostly the thing that gets me is that most all available ammo I have seen is at best military ball and this is a signifigant limiting factor if ones goal is a true percision rifle. To be clear I am not knocking any one who wants to attempt such a project . |

I could live without the brake. If it's going to be a sporter, why not slap a barrel on it too? That guy sort of looks like.... http://www.firearmstalk.com/forums/customavatars/avatar2775_1.gif LOL...he does sort of look like Big Gay Al. |

As much as I would be against doing something like that to any mosin (me personally), I think the owner put some thought into exactly what he wanted.
And got what he was after. I agree with the poster that said that the Mosin nutnfancy fixed up, was about as far as I would ever go. ( to a 91/30 only ) (black durakote or gunkote? and a red dot) I guess I could see bedding the barrel, and maybe doing some trigger work. (timney even maybe?) I know people like to say, "why put money into a $100 gun?" But if in the end you get something that suits you very well, what the hell? I still need to get a mosin before they dry up like the SKS did. Even if it's your run of the mill 91/30. Hopefully the surplus ammo doesn't dry up for a long, long time. |

It looks like a game changer, something that has never been done before. Do you work at Red Jacket? ![]() haha i remember that post in the 1911 forum. but in all seriousness i dont see the point in putting that kind of money in a mosin but that being said the quality of work done to it looks great. minus that goofy compensator. tho i know the customer wanted it so im not blaming the smiths. |

They make custom sporters out of them across the pond. I hate thumbhole stocks though. U.K? Never seen one here. We tend to use Enfields, P14s, K98s and K31s for sporters, and most are pretty horrid in comparison to this. I found a sporterised No.4 at an auction recently; there is always loads of them, so nothing unusual there, but somebody had fitted a very rare SA80 LSW bipod and rear grip to it. Another gem (No.4 again) had been fitted in a synthetic stock, had the barrel cutback to around 18" inches with a fixed brake, then somebody had seemingly welded a 20rnd 7.62 mag onto the original 10rnd 7.62 mag. Yes, this Mosin is quite tasteful in comparison to what is modified here. |

to be a killjoy, my first thought is that the customer is going to see this post and get into your boss's ass about you posting it up on the internet.
Second thought would be: thumbhole stocks are butt ugly and that muzzle brake is stupid ugly. Its a free country. If the customer wants some goofy shit, then inform the customer of other choices, but the bottom line is the customer is an adult and he can spend what he wants. People come in the store where I work all of the time to buy .300 WSM rifles for whitetail ("shoots flatter"). I try to discourage them.......but it is a free country and I sell them what they want. |

Looks like a Mosin sporter to me, one that I would love to own.
