I want to stain a custom walnut stock purple for my wife and daughter.  I want something blueish purple not something that can be confused with pink.  Something available locally at a hardware store, walmart, or joann fabrics would be nice.  Is RIT a possibility?

Rit will do it BUT you have to mix the rite color.
Test with a cotton ball in an inlet or somewhere you can't see.

I stained a ruger 20-22 stock with purple rit dye for my daughters, it is very purple, no mistaking it for pink.  I will try to take a pic and post it here, can't find the pic I thought I had

Hey thanks.  Was it the liquid dye?

I used RIT purple powder dye on a pair of water buffalo bone stocks.  Don't see why it wouldn't work on wood, as well.

Here they are on my Gold Cup.  Some people love them, some people hate them.  I haven't found a neutral opinion yet.

Here's a couple pics of my daughters Ruger 10-22 in purple and my other daughters in red.  Just used the liquid rit dye mixed with 90% alcohol.  Sanded down both of them as good as we could and then stained them.  Between coats I rubbed them down with steel wool.

Why mix it with alcohol?  Any clear coat?  Can you explain the steel wool part in greater detail?

I'm a member over at rimfirecentral which is where I got the idea to use the rit dye.  It was suggested to use the alcohol to help it soak into the wood.  Not sure if it really mattered, I used it for the purple but not the red one.  After each coat dried it would raise  a little bit of the wood grain so the steel wool knocks the surface back down smooth.  On the purple stock I used Krlyon clear coat matte finish to seal it and haven't done anything to the red one.  I just did the red one so thegirls haven't had a chance to bang it around yet.  The key to getting the stain to take it getting all of the old finish off the wood so you have plenty of grain available to soak up the rit dye.  I used a wood stripper my FIL had left over from a project and lots of sandpaper to prep the wood.  Let me know if you need any other info.

Thanks.
