I dug up some .30-06 when cleaning out my storage room and can't really figure out what it is. The headstamp says "AI 55 B" and the closest I could come up with after plenty of Googling was some wildcat cartridge from way back called Ackley Improved. The neck dimensions are supposed to be slightly different but I really can't tell by simple comparison.

It looks to be clean stuff, but I'm still at a loss as to whether this is Ackley stuff or some rare surplus (Dutch stuff seems to come up a lot in the search results). Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks.

No one has ever made factory 30-06 Ackley cases, so thats not it. And you would be able to see the difference readily just by comparing it with a standard cartridge.

My vote is for old military brass of some sort.

The 55 may be the year of manufacture.
