Hi guys I have two questions

I would like to build a short barrel AR, probably a retro Vietnam era type, ( shorty)can someone tell me the barrel length they used? Does it or not include flash suppressor

Second question, what is the legal minimum length for South Carolina... I'm fuzzy on the law requirments. Does it register as a pistol? rifle? or not legal at all?
Thanks

16" min, unless the muzzle device is permanently attached then it counts toward the length. Less than that, then its a SBR, Pistols can be down to min gas tube length no stock.

retro would be 11.5barrel +5.5 muzzle device. I would suggest a 16" barrel profiled so that a bored out MD will fit over it, get the look plus the longer barrel.

Actually, the muzzle device, or moderator is about 4.5" long (a little less) if you want
to do it accurate and have it SBR'd. The later version had an 11.5" barrel but the
earlier versions had a 10" barrel on them. If you go to the retro forum you can get a
lot of information on them there.

If the weapon has a buttstock and the barrel is under 16" it has to be registered as an
SBR requiring the Form 1 if you build or Form 4 if you buy and a $200.00 tax. If you
have the total barrel length over 16" then it is just a rifle, so you could add a muzzle
device, plus barrel for the length IF the muzzle devise is permanently attached.

What everyone else said...

All NFA is good to go in SC so you can get whatever you want...  What part of SC are you in?

If you are interested in putting together a VN-style shorty, check out the Retro Forum on this site. Lots of good info and reference material.
