From what I have read on the CMP website, you pretty much have to produce all of the same proof of eligibility to buy ammo as you do to buy a rifle from CMP. I made copies of the following to mail to CMP so that I can buy some ammo from them: -Birth Certificate -Range membership card (CMP affiliated) and Pistol Permit -Copy of C&R license This should be all I need to order ammo, right? Do they notify me somehow to let me know that they have received this info and I'm good to go on ordering ammo? |
I haven't ordered anything from CMP before, I bought my Garand at a gun show but I need some reasonably priced ammo for it and CMP seems to have the best price. Should I just mail the info in and wait a few days to order the ammo and assume that they have my info at that point (it should only take a day or two for them to receive the mail since I live in AL)? |
| I believe that you only need to show that kind of paperwork on surplus ammo like the Lake City. On commercial ammo, and the Greek .30-06 falls into that category, you should not need to show all of that. Go to the ask Orest section of the CMP forum and see what you need. |
I would send in the order with the paperwork. |
you can mail it all together with your order no problems. and you need to establish CMP eligibility to buy ANYTHING from them, rifles, ammo, parts, memorabelia, anything, surplus or commercial |
|
The info can be found on the online forms: Order Form In short, for ammunition, you need:
I would still consider sending all the info needed for buying a rifle, one of which includes a notarized certification of eligibility. All this will go into your record and will be ready when you want to buy a rifle from them. |

well, let's stop guessing and here's the source material: www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/eligibility_requirements.htm |
| Thanks for all of the info. The only two strikes against me ordering ammo from CMP is the fact that I will be charged tax since I live in AL (although it still comes out cheaper than anywhere else I've found) and they only ship FedEx adult signature required...I am at work 95% of the time that delivery attempts are made, and I live pretty far from the pickup points. |
Wow, tax and shipping |
I would spend more on gas than the shipping would cost me. I am as far south as you can get in AL, it would take about 10 hours and 700 miles round trip to go to Anniston and back. With that being said I plan to one day make the trip, but it wouldn't be a spur of the moment, just to buy ammo trip. |
Just wanted to add: You can scan & e-mail all of the proof of eligibility! Speeds things up a bit! |

As mentioned before, I would go ahead and send in ALL the CMP paperwork(notorized portion also) so you are completly qualified to order EVERYTHING from them. Still a lot of fine rifles to be had there. As far as signing for it, depends on how much you get. After ordering a case of LC, I decided I'd been crazy for not ordering the Greek since it came loaded in enblocs already. So just for the heck of it, I ordered a can (192 rds) just to see what it shot like, and this would give me some more enblocs also. This was only around $50+ for this so I didn't have to sign. Orest has stated on the website that anything over $100 has to be signed for. My "can" of ammo was sitting in front of my door when I got home from work, but I had to sign for my CMP stock which was $120+. Greg |
| Very useful info, I may just e-mail everything to them. I am due to renew my range membership next month, so I may wait until then to send the info in to CMP because the info they provide says that you have to keep all eligibility info up to date with them. It is also interesting to find out that they won't require a signature on orders under $100... I wonder if I ordered one of the 480 round cans of Greek that is exacly $100 if they would require a signature. |
| I had thought that all ammo had to be signed for, and everything else I've gotten from the CMP had to be. AND Fed Ex didn't deliver twice because of it. I picked it up at the dist center. Maybe the driver got lazy that day, I don't know. But it made me wonder after reading what Orest wrote in one of his posts. Best to just ask them. Greg |
