Ok, I have a PSL that I love dearly. It's an early import, had it forever. My problem is, it's a rust magnet on the barrel. This being said, I've left it for weeks and came back and the surface rust just wipes off. But it's still irritating. Is this a major problem? How long in that condition until the gun just rusts away? Of course if I keep it wiped down it's fine. But if I take the gun camping or to my cabin, I don't want to have to baby it.

To sum it up, my question is this:

Is leaving surface rust on the gun going to destroy it very quickly, and is it something I should worry about? I know it can hurt the finish, but I'm more worried about the gun as a whole.

My opinion is that any rust is bad.  Every time your wipe away the rust, it is taking some of the metal.  Repeat that enough times and you'll have pittings.

And yes that's definitely bad. But I'm wondering if it's actually the metal that's rusting, or the finish. Because at this point, I should have no gun left considering the number of times I've had to do this.

edit: And is this normal, or should I have the thing refinished?

bead blast and repark it

Buy some Corrosion X and put it on your gun. It is a great rust preventative.

The main reason I ask, is I plan on taking this gun with me camping for a month or two. I don't want to bring a cart of cleaning supplies (the gun is supposed to be rugged!). Would it be adequate to just wipe it down every once and a while or should I have it refinished prior?

I put Corrosion-X on my Makarov once a year. Then carried it often. Sweat beaded up on it and all I would do is wipe the sweat off on my pants. No rust.....ever. Try it!!!

I have Corrosion-X on this AK. It has been over a year and no rust. I do not wipe it down after handling it either.

IMHO you should refinish the gun.  Seems like once rust get a strong hold, you're just fighting a delaying action.  Hate to hear that you spent lots of time on your camping trip watching your gun rush and cursing!
