Is it normal to cut the barrel down to 17 inches? I was offered one with a 17 inch barrel for a 308 ar build I have. I know nothing about the M1a. I am looking to shoot steel at 600 yards and I would like to get to 1000 eventually.

Don't buy! Never buy a used weapon that has been Frankensteined. M1As should be 22,18, or 16 with the modified gas system.

There are quite a few different length factory barrels out there.
The gas systems are all the same, but the shortest barrels use a proprietary gas lock.

16.25, 18.00, and 22.00 are standard lengths, but SEI & the
Chinese had 16.75, and I think someone is producing a 19.25.

Do some research on the rifle in question, and look for markings on the barrel.

You are saying "for an AR build", correct?
A barrel with a M14/M1A exterior contour probably would require some contour machining to fit an AR receiver/handguards/gas system.
If you are willing to go for that external work, you wold probably be better by buying a barrel blank in whatever caliber you want.

Yes a AR build.
I built a 308 ar and I am now thinking about trading it for a M1A. I was offered a  MA9106 with a 17 inch barrel for my AR.

I think it's a trade offer, his AR for the M14 with a 17" barrel

M1-A's need the longest barrel, i.e. 22" if you actually intend to shoot 1000 yards competitively.

USAMU M14's designated for 1000 yard competition were machined with no feed ramps so the case was fully supported when the bolt was closed. It's basically a single shot rifle that automatically ejects the fired round.

Any length barrel will shoot well at 600 yards with match grade ammo.
