I know this test will only give a basic idea of MW and that there are variables, but would this appear acceptable? Measures .178 from muzzle to case mouth (Greek M2 ball).

Wouldn't call myself a guru.  But it looks good!  I only have a few like new Garands and thats about how far the bullet/case stands out.

That looks great but make sure that it is a USGI M2 ball round.  The Dane ammo sold a while back had different size bullet and couldn't be used for the bullet test.

Looks good.  I've had some go down alot further than that but still shoot acceptably.

It looks very good, at least for the bullet test.  A photo showing the actual crown would be nice.  A flaw can give you a false "GO BUY!" indication.

Osprey,
Certainly not a guru, but I've spent a LOT of time looking at various garand bullet/bore gaging and that looks like a winner. My CMP order for a Service Grade Garand has been "Open" since 10/31 -- it might arrive by the end of this year. I hope it compares favoritely to yours. Of course I'll post pics and maybe targets from its initial session at Knights Trail.
How does yours shoot? Is it a CMP buy?

Sorry no photo but, I was told it reads 1.5+ on a MW gauge.

Should be a winner.  I'd feel pretty good buying anything under 2.
