I purchased a V3 about a month ago, and so far I love it.  However, I noticed that it's giving velocities about 50-75fps faster than my Pro Chrono.  Is this normal?  If so, do you guys just deduct 50fps from your results and call it good?  Or can it be "calibrated" somehow?

The Magnetospeed is much more accurate than the Pro Chrono. If anything, add the velocity to the Pro Chrono. I tested both recently and found that the Pro Chrono gave 50-75 fps slower velocity compared to a Magnetospeed and a LabRadar. Not every shot, but some.

I have both and they read close enough to each other I couldn't say which is right, and the Magneeto speed has compared to an Ohler 35P, close also.

Another possible reason for the discrepancy is the the magnetospeed is right at the muzzle while the optical chronograph is some distance from the muzzle.  The projectile begins to slow down as soon as there is no more pressure behind it accelerating it.

Yes but the 10 feet will not be a 50-75 fps difference. It's closer to 10 fps. When the Pro Chrono reads correctly, my 6.5 CM will only read about 7 fps different between the two chronos. However, the SD and ES readings are the same.

ETA: This is assuming you place your ProChrono 10 ft from the muzzle.

I had a chrony for probably 15 years before I got the magnetospeed.  The chrony would show 100fps velocity swings from sun to shade, so it was useless on a partly cloudy day.  The Magnetospeed has been remarkably consistent.

The chrony and pro chrono are both optical and neither is an Oehler, so I feel they are suspect.

Does anyone know what chrono(s) are used in the major reloading manuals?  Just curious.

I trust my Magnetospeed more than any of the cheaper traditional chronographs.

No idea what they use. I bet it's quite a few different ones. My velocity rarely matches what the books show though. I'm using different brass, primers, barrel lengths, and sometimes twist rates. As far as I know (and in my testing with my 6.5CM) barrels tend to speed up a bit after 150-200 rounds as well. That's why it's important to chronograph your loads in your rifle.

I wish my Magnetospeed would give me stellar results...well it does, when it actually works. Been having a problem on my Sporter display module turning off and saying the bayo isn't plugged in. Magnetospeed is supposed to be sending one this week as a replacement. Also if the unit gets bumped, it records a shot of like 500 or so fps...so annoying. They believe it's a bad jack on the display unit.

But I concur with the above...when mine works, I trust the Magnetospeed as much as everything but a Lab Radar (which I hope to get within the next year )

My maganaspeed sporter and Labradar are dead nuts the same.

A buddy of mine has a Labradar and a V3 and his are the same as well.

I do not know but I guess they're using Oehlers and have been doing so for decades.  In the future they'll probably migrate to the labradar.
