For you casters that use gas checks, do you still need lube? Would you even bother with gas checks in 9mm. With properly hard cast 9mm bullets can I expect lead free after 700+ shooting session? Still debating casting and oh yes I'll been reading a lot over at Cast Boolits but I don't want another account so I figured I ask here.

9mm can be tricky to cast for.
First thing you need to do is slug your barrel and go from there. My SW model 59 likes the Lee 125 rnfp mold, sized to 357". My alloy runs 10-12 BHN. That should be plenty hard if your bullet is big enough to fit the barrel. You still need lube, but shouldn't need gas checks for 9mm. |

Unless you're paper patching, you really need to lube the bullets. I've been doing some reading lately that suggests you might be able to get by without it in some circumstances, but I'm going to keep lubing since I'd rather shoot than scrub lead out of the barrel. |

Get some chore boy copper scrubbing pads. Make sure you get the "chore boy" brand because they are all copper and not copper-plated-mystery-china metal. You can get 2 for around $2.
The quickest and easiest way to remove lead from a pistol barrel is wrap a small bore brush with a small amount of copper pot scrubbers. One or two passes and the lead is all gone. It's like magic. |
| copper gas checks do not "scrub" you still have to lube them to keep lead out of the barrel. Alternative use zinc washer swaged bullets the zinc washer will scrape the lead out every shot. They used to called as the "Harvey" "protects bore' bullets. dies washers were available from C-H |

For you casters that use gas checks, do you still need lube? Yes Would you even bother with gas checks in 9mm. I don't, but I only push them to 1,000 fps. An economy/ practice load for me. Why add .03 cents to a free bullet? With properly hard cast 9mm bullets can I expect lead free after 700+ shooting session? Depends on MV, bore smoothness, lube, size of bullet vs bore size. .............. With properly hard cast 9mm bullets can I expect lead free after 700+ shooting session? .............. I can do that with my cast 225gr 45acp loads, I'd need to take the gun to the car wash after that though because of the soot from the bullet lube. I need to clean the lead out of my Glock 17 Lone Wolf barrel after every IDPA match (108-180 rounds) with my 147gr cast 9mm loads. My Beretta 92 can go twice as long before it needs to get the lead out, I attribute that to the chrome lined barrel. |
