So I reload a lot of different calibers, but just added .357 Sig. The only other bottle necked pistol calibers I load are 7.62X25 and .30 Mauser. Anyway, my question is, does anyone bell the case mouth? My RCBS die set only has two dies, but the Montana Gold's I was loading were very difficult to seat. They don't have a bevel on the base, and any if they weren't perfectly aligned going up into the die, you'd have to back it out and try again (or crush the case, which my son did. I had to explain that seating a bullet should never take that much force, so if it doesn't go smooth, something's wrong.) I'm thinking of using a belling die from another caliber, not sure which, to put a slight bell on the mouth next time. BTW, load was 125 gn Montana Gold HP over Unique. Chrono results from Lone Wolf barrel in Glock 23 6.0gn = 1118 fps 6.5gn = 1206 fps 7.0gn = 1256 fps 7.5gn = 1319 fps |

9mm expander die will work fine, since RCBS does not include one in in their set instead.
Just don't go buck wild, since it's a stepped shoulder case and can end up budging the case shoulder if too much bullet crimp is used. P.S, always found it strange that it was called a 357 sig, since it kind of like 10mm trimmed brass necked down to a 9mm instead (does not use a .357" bullet in factory loading, but a .355" bullet instead). So since you don't want to use 40 brass since it will be too short and not strong enough, and 357 sig brass is cheaper than 10mm brass, nothing to really make the brass out of that is on the cheap side instead (right up there with 38 super and 9x23 brass). Funny yet, I am pushing faster loads out of my 9mm major, which use 9mm brass that is cheaper and more plentiful instead. |
I was thinking I'd use the .30 Lyman "M die" for this, but it looks like the expander is too long for Tok cases, and the appropriate caliber M die for .357 would also probably be too long for your .357 Sig cases. So... The Lee Universal Neck Expander die with NOE Bullets' expanders (like the M die but more compact) looks like the way I'm going to go. It's not an expensive option, but it's one more thing to take up space in my die storage!
