I am looking at suppressors for my .308 and cannot find any within my state. What costs are involved when transfering one from another state to my state?

If you buy it from someone on a Form 3 (Class 3 dealers)  you will not have to pay any extra taxes although your in state class 3 will most likely charge you a transfer fee.

it seems as the closest class 3 dealer is over 2 hrs away from me, how much of the process can you do without being there in person (other than picking it up)

you could do most of it by mail.  you could mail him the money.  when the suppressor gets in, he could fill out the form 4 with your info,  and mail it to you.  depending on the transfer type you may have some more things to do.  for example if it's a personal transfer, you would have to do the cleo signoff, photo, fingerprints before you send it off to atf with the tax money.  when the approved form comes back you would then go and pick it up.  so it's possible to only see the dealer once.

All of it except the actual pickup, in which you have to do FTF, either at his shop, or a gun show in the state.

Go to the KY hometown forum and ask if anybody knows of an SOT in your area.  I bet there is one closer to you than you think.  Many SOT keep a low profile, don't advertise etc.
