I am looking at the SAPI plate at bulletproofme:  Rated at 4.9 lbs for the Medium plate  9.5"x12.5"

The US Military SAPI (Small Arms Protective Insert) mil-spec requires survivability of 3 hits total from an AK-47, M-16 or Dragunov. Plus we have also tested for the 7.62 X 39mm API - Armor Piercing Incidinary threat and .308 FMJ.  A lighter weight Ceramic (Alumina Oxide) plate that exceeds Mil Spec SAPI performance!

It is rated to stop:

7.62 X 39mm API  Armor Piercing Incidinary

5.56 x 45mm  .223 M855  aka Green Tip .223 or SS-109 M-16

7.62 × 51mm  .308 Winchester FMJ  aka NATO ball Battle Rifles and Machine Guns

7.62 × 54mm Russian Light Penetrating Steel (R LPS) Dragunov Sniper Rifle

Anybody know or care to speculate if this plate can also stop common 5.56 x 45mm  55gr M193?

1911_Mitch:

Take note that the requirements on the SAPI plate are different from NIJ ratings. NIJ does NOT test for any 5.56 threats at all, so a plate rated for NIJ level 3 may or may not stop 5.56. You have to do your homework and get it either on the plate or in writing from the manufacturer exactly what rounds the plate has been rated to stop. A plate that stops M855 may not stop M193.

Just for your info, you might check out this thread over at Lightfighter concerning testing of level 3 plates for law enforcement use; it's informative.  You do have to register to view it.
