I just put a 1938 Mauser built Luger on layaway at my LGS. I've always wanted at least 1 Luger to add tom my collection, but I only know the most basic stuff about them. It appears to be in really good shape and is all numbers matching except the magazine. Is there anything I should watch out for with this pistol? What is the rarity of the Mauser produced ones?

Need more details, is it a Banner Mauser marking on the toggle? What are the proof marks, could be police issue, contract or civilian production. Import marked? Serial number fonts match? Remove side plate and see if the numbers inside are one digit higher than the first two of the serial number. 1938 would be hot blued with blued small parts. Pictures would help. How much did you pay?

I haven't taken possesion yet, it's on layaway till I can afford the rest of the pricetag. Total price will be $950+tax. No Mauser banner, major markings on it are "S/42" on toggle and "1938" on the breech, won't be able to remove the side plate till I actually take possesion of it(or at least I think the shop wouldn't be keen on letting me do so.). I'm still very much an amateur and am not knowledgable enough to tell what kind of blueing it has or the various proof marks.

Ok, so it's a common wartime Mauser military model. $950 is a steal if it's a non import marked gun and a good price if it's a russian capture all matching.

Cool, post pics when you get it. Not a bad price for a Luger. I had to have one for my collection. They are a very interesting action. Before you ever try to shoot it have someone knowledgeable with the action take a look at it. The one I have was very interesting to say the least. Mine is all matching also with the mag being the exception. I had to replace the firing pin and sear in order to fire mine, I do fire it very seldom though.
