Regarding sighting in:

I read an article about sighting in the irons on AKs at 25M (82 ft) and did so with my CAI VZ-2008.  The article said to do this with the rear ramp set on 1.  However, after zeroing at 25M with the ramp on 1 and getting 5/8" 5 shot groups....when I went to 100M I was shooting about 9" low....decent grouping...just low.

Was the article correct about having the rear leaf sight set on 1 or should I have set it on U to sight in at 25M?  If I was supposed to set it on U to sight in at 25M, it would make more sense in that then I would think when I'd go out to 100M, I would set the rear sight to 1.  OTOH, since the U setting is higher than 1, if I sight in at U, and then move to 1, that would make the bullet impact drop significantly more, wouldn't it?

Obviously, I don't understand the trajectory of the 7.62x39 round (this is my first rifle in that caliber). Any help explaining this to me would be appreciated.

Also, this rifle seems really robust and so far has been 100% reliable.  The more I shoot it, the more I like it....

Are there any parts you'd say are 'must haves' in terms of spares?  I'm thinking of ordering more magazine springs, but beyond that this thing is so simple I'm not sure what might be a common break point unless maybe the striker mechanism could wear down over time.  Are there any parts you guys would recommend?

Here's a few pics of my rifle:

With the factory (CAI) slant brake, Fab Defense pistol grip, synthetic foregrip from czechpoint-usa, and modded rear folder:

Folded:

(You can flip the safety to fire with the stock folded, but you can't flip it back without opening the stock)

With recoil pad, neoprene cheek pad and CNCwarrior compensator:

"U" is the 300m battle sight.  You should keep it at 1 for 100m or less.

Right, I know that....

However, does that mean I should sight the rifle in at 100M with the rear leaf sight set on 1?  I'm assuming so....but I wonder why the article was telling me to do so at 25M?  Maybe so you could get the groups down tight enough to tell if you needed to adjust windage/elevation?  Like I said, at 25M with irons, I was getting 5/8" 5 shot groups. Obviously at 100M, the rifle is only rated to be 8MOA though most shoot much tighter groups (mine seems to be 4-5 and I am not a good shot....I think a better marksman could get my particular rifle down a few MOAs).

Since group size for me is on the order of 4-5" at 100M,  I'm guessing the 25M recommendation was to 'dial in' the sights with more accuracy/repeatability than a 4-5" group (with irons) would allow at 100M, correct?

Thanks,
Sean

It's  just the factory folder with a piece of cold rolled steel machined, hand filed and welded in as a brace and an additional sling mount.  I put the slot in piece of steel up by the hinge b/c I had wrapped that part of the stock (the part with the neoprene) in paracord at first....but the roughness of the paracord coupled with the lack of the compensator actually tore through my cheek after a mag or two off a bench.  Firing from standing wasn't a problem....but when you really lock down on the stock with your cheek weld from a sandbagged bench, the abrasion was a bit much for my cheek....at least until I put on the compensator.  Now it's perfect.

I love this gun.  It's really fun to shoot and has so far been 100% reliable.

I agree I think that article is wrong. I would zero at 100 m with the rear set to 1 = 100 m . With the trajectory of a 7.62x39, I would think a 100 m zero would be high at 25 m and if dead on at 25 m, be low at 100 m

Ya, I asked the question in the AK forum and the consensus was that the advice was correct for an AK, but not for the VZ....while the two look sight systems look similar, they must not be b/c the 25M zero is apparently what a lot of AK guys use to sight in, but they end up being only a few inches high at 100M.

Beats me....I'm going to sight in at 100 and go from there.  If I remember I post up and tell you what the 25M results were with a 100M zero.

Thanks for the input.
