A buddy of mine asked me what the shortest legal length for an ar15 is.
My answer was it had to have a 16" barrel and an OAL of 36" (?) Is this true??? Or am I mistaken? Thanks, Lrc |

If the AR15 in question is a Title 1 rifle than the following rules apply.
16 inch length of barrel (not including any removeable muzzle attachements like the flash hider, etc.) Overall length of 26" inches with the stock in the fully extended position. If the AR15 in questin is a Title 1 handgun than the follow rules apply. No restriction on barrel length No restriction on overall length Cannot have a stock attached Cannot have a vertical foregrip attached. If the AR15 is a Title II Short Barrel Rifle registered with the NFRTR No restriction on barrel length No restrictionon overall length If the barrel length or overall length is "permanently" modified you will need to notify the NFA branch of the ATF with the new permanent dimentions If the AR15 is a Title II AOW registered with the NFRTR No restriction on barrel length No restriction on overall length Cannot have a stock attached You may have a vertical foregrip attached. If the barrel length or overall length is "permanently" modified you will need to notify the NFA branch of the ATF with the new permanent dimentions Hope this helps. James Austin, Texas |
