I have a pair of worn in 5.11 in khaki and a truspec combat shirt also khaki.
Love them, but they're too light in the woods. I bought brown rit to darken them. Now I'm wondering if I can dye them inconstantly to almost make a pattern of light and dark. My bro suggested twist and dip in a tie dye fashion . I'm wondering maybe I can apply something to the fabric pre dying to prevent absorption. Any ideas? No experience with rit |

raf is the unofficial Rit expert around here. At least with gear.
Have you checked Rit's website? I know they have some great info available. I would think that the twist and dip method might work. Also maybe laying it flat and "painting" it on? Another option would be to dust it with Krylon or Rustoleum. |

There are instructions on www.ritdye.com about tie-dying, and perhaps reading up would be of assistance. I would be very reluctant to use any of the Rit Browns or Tans because of my negative experiences with same when dyeing nylon gear. Your fabric very likely has a nylon/cotton blend material, and I have no experience with using Rit Browns or Tans on clothing material.
However, I have some positive experience with using Rit Taupe dye on nylon gear, and that is what I would use on your clothing. In my thread on Rit dye in Tac Gear forum, there are pix of a set of ACUs dyed with Rit Taupe, and they came out fine. |

Hey raf, what color on the Rit Dye color chart do you think resembles Olive Drab the most? I was on their site and I think I got green tinted eyes trying to determine which one was the best match for US OD green. If I was to try to dye white nylon fabric, I'd use one of their formulas. But I'm not. I--and almost all of us--are dyeing already dyed nylon, and so we must take into consideration the base color(s) to which we are adding dye. Taupe applied to, say, UCP camo looks different from the same dye applied to 3-color desert, and that's on account of the underlying dye. So, the answer lies in experimentation, and taking notes. |
