I am going to put a 10.5 inch barrel upper on my SBR. I want it to have a heavy barrel with a low profile gas block. I am wondering why so many people seem to put 9" rails instead of 7" on their uppers. Is this because the gas block and some of the gas tube would not be covered by the quad rail? I want a 7" FF quad rail but if the gas port is in a place that makes this a bad idea I will just go with the 9".

I think, that it may be asthetically pleasing to many people, to not use the standard sight base, but rather to use the 9" rail, and a rail mounted front sight.  It is bad ass.

Is there any reason not to do this with a 7" instead of 9". My plan is to attach a flip down front sight to the end of the rail just like you are saying. (What you described is basically what I am going for) Obviously this will make my sights 2" closer together but is it a big deal.

I do not plan on putting anything on the rail but a surefire M910. So I don't need the extra space or weight.

On a side note: I have been looking a Larue quad rails and I might go that direction, but I would prefer a continuous rail on top between upper receiver and quad rail for mounting optics. What is a quality rail that would do this? I also want one that will not shift like I have heard Daniel Defense does. (Correct me if I am wrong on that)

This one.

However I currently don't care about that so the standard FSB and 7" rail is fine for me.

I do understand that people find this pleasing, so do I, but I would like it with a slightly shorter quad rail.  I don't like the look of them with suppressors on. It looks like you have an integral suppressor and I hate that look. I want to be able to see some barrel when I put my suppressor on.

I don't want the standard FSB.

Well, go for it!  That is the beauty in all the different modifications and choices.  There is no 'right' answer.  You build it as you see fit.  ENJOY!

I run a Larue 7.0 on my 10.5 and really like it, if you like the "slick" look the 9.0 is a good way to do it, you wont see the Gas Block.

Well you can do a 7" rail, and a gasblock with a built in flip up sight. Or you can use a gas block with a rail and mount a flip sight onto it. Or you can get a low profile gas block and mount the flip sight to the rail. Ah so many options so little time, hehe
