To the range today to test 5.56 loads of IMR 4198,

not choice powder for an AR, but with 55gr projos

and carbine length gas system should cycle OK.

Start charge 20grs, 0.2 grain steps up to 21 grs.

Depending on manual, high charge is in max load

zone but OK in 5.56 chamber.

Also get to work out my second love, SA M1A.

Should be a great day, will file range report later tonight

or early tomorrow.

Everything good at range, mild temp for AL in August,

no wind, partially cloudy.

All loads of IMR 4198 cycled perfectly, recoil was less

than Fed xm193 for all charges. Of the six loads tested,

(5 rounds each @ .2 gr steps from 20.0-21.0),

the 21 gr loads grouped best at 1".

Absolutely no over pressure signs, all loads had

rounded edges on spent primers, no flattening or

back out. Don't have chrono so no velocity data.

IMR 4198 seems OK in carbine length gas systems,

plan to enjoy the 4 lbs of it I have.

Glad to hear things went well for you. I will be hitting the range today with my first reloaded 9mm rounds.

I've used IMR-4198 in 7.62x39, works well there.

Never tried it in 223, as I prefer mid to slow burning powders in my 223 loads.

But if it works for you and there is nothing wrong with "use what you have", within reason.

Like you are.
