What internally controls the rate of fire on an automatic weapon, specifically the MP5?

Basically its the mass of the carrier, the recoil spring, and the locking peice.

As far as this answer, im almost 100% sure thats right, as there are no mechanical restrictions that i can see inside of mine. Then again im not an HK expert like some of these other guys. Hopefully they will chime in.

And the recoil impulse of the ammo you're using.

I am running cheap Winchester target ammo. Better ammo faster firing?

Yes, the more powerful ammo will result in a higher rate of fire. WWB isnt the most powerful stuff out there, but it sure is nice for plinking.

Hammer catch angle also affects cycle rate. The retimed hammers that Adam Webber sells (hkparts.net) reportedly slow the rate back down to the true MP5 rates.
