I am refinishing the wood on a spotless Special Grade Garand. I need to remove the wood. All of it. The instructions to remove the rear handguard clip on the CMP website is half ass. I purchased a pair of Baker Handguard Clip Pliers from Midway. Now, I'm not the smartest guy in the world...but I ain't the dumbest either. Either I got the wrong thing, or this specialty tool is just garbage. The clip has a couple of holes, presumably for the purposes of installation and removal. See Below -  This Baker tool, however, has a completely different interface. See below -  I thought that with these pliers, I would be able to put the lime in the coconut and shake it all up. But no...round hole, square peg. WTF? Halp. |

You've got to get the lower handguard off the barrel before you can remove the clip from the handguard. It's not so much a handguard removal tool as it is a handguard-clip removal (and installation) tool.
Disassemble the rifle as you normally would. Remove the gas cylinder and upper handugard. Then, drift out the lower band roll pin, remove the lower band (twist it if it's stuck on the barrel), and slide the lower handguard forward and off of the barrel. Then use the tool to remove the handguard clip. Reassemble in reverse order. Those lower handguards are prone to cracking if you try to remove/install them any other way. |

To get the clip off of the handguard: You can pull the ends of the spring clip apart, allowing the clip to slide off the handguard............... Obtain a length of picture wire or other sturdy wire stock that can fit through the hole in the rear handguard spring hole. Twist the end of wire through one of the holes to secure the wire to the spring clip. Place the other end of the wire into a vise and secure it so it will not slide out. Support the wood of your handguard with your fingertips. Pull the handguard clip slowly away from the vise, the wire will hold the end of the clip, as the clip ends are separated, you can turn the wood handguard out of the clip. You will exert force against the edge of the wood handguard, with the oppostie end of the clip, so go steady and don't yank on it. |

Piece of cake if you know what the hell you're doing. |
