I have never really had much interest in knives since I was in Boy scouts in the 60's. So a month or so ago I came across my old Monarch Bowie Knife that I had when I was in boy scouts. You really needed a Bowie knife to be cool while camping although they served no real purpose at the time. The old girl had been sitting in the basement for decades sadly neglected. I took her up to my office and started working on the corrosion and she cleaned up OK. Next I spent a lot of time putting a tolerable edge on her and it holds it seem to be holding it pretty good. Still need a little more sharpening, but way better than it was. When done a I will give it a coating of EEZOX and she should be good to go again. My job it occasionally takes me past the KA-Bar factory near Olean. NY. So I ordered one of their Marine fighting knives just to say I had one. What a beast. The 7" blade is a bit long for some stuff, but has that nice EBR appeal to it. I want to carve a turkey with it. Should cause some talk around the table at Thanksgiving. I do think the spousal unit will insist I use our normal cutlery though. So now, being addicted, I ordered 2 Camillus manufactured USAF survival knives from Army Surplus Warehouse. These arrived yesterday. Made in 1984 and sitting in their original plastic bags. I figured for $19.99 each I couldn't miss and I didn't. The only problem was some slight corrosion and one of the snaps on the upper case was broken. All spelled out in the ad. I am pretty pleased with them. Built like a tank. Definitely my carry knife while walking in the woods. Now I just need a small practical folding knife for everyday use. I always passed on knives at flea markets and gun show, but I think I will take a closer look at them from now on. |

Yup... once the knife bug hits it'll grab you. I got into knives several years ago as a cheaper alternative to growing my gun collection. But in the end, it's not been much cheaper cause I've bought enough knives to buy a couple of guns. Anyways... for larger fixed blade knives I have been grabbing-up the Browning Field Duty Extreme stuff. They were made by TOPS knives and are well-made and stout. Love em! Also have some Kabar, Benchmade, and Cold Steel fixed blades that are 2nd tier picks for me. For folders, I've been partial to the Kershaw Ken Onion designs. I've been every-day-carrying a Kershaw for years now. (I've lost three of the darn things unfortunately). This past year I've been carrying the Kershaw Rainbow Groove every day. But I think I'm going to replace that with the Black Tanto Groove soon. These knives are a great value and I've been able to get them razor sharp with my Gatco sharpening system. |

I've had the knife bug for years, second only to the gun bug. I've started building an addition on our house with a full basement. The basement has already been designated for, as my wife say, "all my shit". I plan on putting my knife collection, now in storage, on display on the wall. I have all the knives I saved from my Navy days as well as the various bayos that I've gotten with my C&R rifles. I hope to make a very nice wall display of them. The military surplus knives out there on the surplus market are usually very good deals and look great on display... as well as being very useful. |
