Hello,
Can you recommend some sharpening tools? I need some stones for my knives, maybe something to attach to the blade so I keep it at the correct angle for sharpening until I learn what I am doing, and a grinder for my axe and machetes. What do you use? Resources/Links would be appreciated. Thanks, |

Spyderco Sharpmaker or if you are willing to drop crazy dough edgepro. I hear edgepro is idiot proof. I will second the Spyderco Sharpmaker, I have one and love it. You can sharpen any knife blade or profile with only a downward motion as the stones are set to the correct angle. |
| I bought a Lansky sharpener with 5 stones and the sharpening fixture for $36 at Sportsmans Warehouse last Sunday. I absolutely hate sharpening knives but I feel it and I did a pretty fair job. It takes some time to get a good edge but it didn't take a car payment to get there either. |

Fixed angle stone systems a-la Gatco, Lansky, Edgepro, etc. work reasonably well... The Spyderco sharpmaker is not bad either (IIRC, Lansky makes a similar type system as well)... I think that when you finish with any of these, that is a good starting point to really refine your edge and get it sharp... From here, I move on to a strop (leather with compound) and in a little while, have a really sharp edge. I never use free hand stones because I don't have that skill set...

Thanks, IN a pinch, in the field, for quick and dirty sharpening, you can also use any one of the tungsten carbide sharpening devices - they aren't the prettiest things and they don't produce beautifully refined edges... but in a pinch, they will get most knifes sharp enough for field work (although perhaps not shaving sharp) and they are small, easy to use, and cheap... One of my favorites in this genre is made by Smith's and the MSRP is $6!!! It has a tungsten carbide sharpener on one side and a ceramic sharpener on the other side to refine the edge created by the carbide.
Good luck on your sharpening adventures... |

Two arkansas stones, a couple dull cheap knives, and a good amount of time.
I think the best way to do it is freestyle and the only way to learn is to practice. Its not as hard as it seems. There are plenty of guides and reference materials to help out. Its like driving a stick shift car "if you can drive it, you can drive anything." |
