For middle school.... The Wifes son is starting 7th grade in a few weeks and the last back pack I got him lasted half the school year before it started to break apart. So I'm tired of buying school packs every year for 70-80 bucks and they break halfway though. Need something durable but doesn't scream tactical. I was thinking of a 5.11 covrt 18. I have one my self but what else is out there that might fir the bill

I got My Son a 511 Rush 12 for school.
It works for him and holds all he needs for Elementary school.
you might need to go to the 24 if He has a lot of books but you should be able to find the measurements online.

The quality is Great for the price.

Edit: You said not tactical so I guess thats out.

What about something like Camelbak's Urban Assault or Urban Transport packs in black? The black models don't have that tactical look to them..

Various The North Face packs get pretty good reviews. The Surge and The Base Camp Hot Shot are two models that come to mind. The Surge is crammed with internal organization features..

L.L. Bean has the best school backpacks you can buy.  Just ordered my son one in woodland camo yesterday.  They are reasonably priced and shipping is always free.  My sister still has the one she carried since 7th grade and its still in great shape.

This, hands down. I got mine back in '01 for my 8th grade year, it lasted through graduation and then another 5 at college ()

I've been using my REI daypack for the last seven years. Carried daily, through college, been all over the continent, hauling shooting gear. Still holding up well.

Kelty Avocet Pack for $30, marked down from $85, is a good deal.  Kelty's site seems to indicate that women's packs are slightly shorter, which might suit your kid better.  Only a few hours left on sale; i just bought two.

I think I would go with a front loading backpack over a top loading pack for a kid going to school. It's just easier to organize junk...

Just sayin'..
