When you register an AR lower receiver, what all are you allowed to do with it?

If you register it as an SBR, you can put a short (less than 16") barrel on it. Can't think of any other way to register it. What were you wanting to "do with it"?

Put a short upper on it.  New machine guns won't be accepted for registration, so your only Form1 option is to SBR it.

You could register it as an AOW or SBS as well.

Come up with a large bore upper for it and you might be able to register it as a DD.  Or register it as an explosive DD and pack it with explosives to make it a grenade.

If you're really creative and good with tools, you could register it as a suppressor and somehow make it into one.

More to the point, you don't "register a lower" and do stuff with it.  You file a Form 1 to MAKE the lower into something, and you must specify beforehand on the application exactly what you'll be doing with it.  ATF may ask you for clarifications, full explanations, or even plans in the process of reviewing your application to make whatever.

If you file a Form 1 to make an SBR using an AR lower, then all an approved Form 1 allows you to do is proceed with the making of an SBR as described in your application.

Yeah, I considered those, but does anyone make a short smoothbore for an AR?  Barring that, an AOW doesn't really make sense (to me) because once it's SBRd you can yank the stock and put all the VFGs on it you want.

Hmm...  Pistol smoothbore AR, with a VFG.  I like it!

There's the Turkish .410 upper.  I don't know if anyone is still importing them, but they're out there.  I thought about doing it at one point, no desire to anymore though.

I agree about the AOW, I'm sure at least a few people have done it though.
