I'm starting to reload for my ar15. Looking to use AR Comp powder with 55gr Hornady FMJ. Is this a good choice or does anyone have any better ideas?

I likes me some Ramshot TAC.......but I'll use H335 for certain loads.

I load most of mine with H322. I also like varget, but try to save that for the .30 caliber stuff.

Titegroup is a pistol powder. DO NOT use it for rifle loads.

THIS!!.

Get  a good manual or do some research on the websites of the various component companies. You'll find good loads there.

Oh, and here's a second for H335.

Most of my .223 reloading has been done with H335, but I found that Varget and the Hornady 55gr fmj combination gives an accurate load in my AR.

I've also used CFE223 and H322 with good success.

First post, and he's talking about loading rifle with pistol powder.

<removed> now that thread is in a tech forum, no need for this. dryflash3

I've achieved the best results for my rifle by reloading rounds with Varget.

For my 55 grain V-Max rounds, CFE223 is awesome!!

I wouldn't use more than 4.0gr of Titegroup. It'll probably yield about 1500fps.

I saw an ol' boy blow up his NIB S&W M&P15 with 25gr of it. Estimated 300,000PSI in front of his face. Luckily no injuries, but the gun was toast. Since then, I call those Dr. Titegroup loads.

If only we had a forum about<removed> don't know what the joke was supposed to be, but I'm not amused.

Now I see, this was posted before thread was moved to this forum. dryflash3

Right on, a full case of Titegroup could be a disaster.  For bullets in the 55 grain range, I prefer Benchmark.  My pet .223 load is 25 grains of Benchmark under Sierra 53 grain Matchkings, with BR-4 primers in Winchester cases.  Very accurate in my 20" Green Mountain 1in8 barrel @ 3050 fps.  - CW

OP, you might need to read the tacked links at the top of the forum, reloading technical assistance. If you are starting out you need some reloading manuals if not acquired yet.  You will not find any loads for Titegroup in rifle cartidges.

I'm going to assume you have several manuals and have read them, so here goes.

Paging through your loading manuals you will find a lot of load data for the 223 Remington.  You will also notice that there is NO data for Hodgdon TiteGroup in any of these manuals.  Why, because TiteGroup is a very very fast pistol powder and should not be used for standard loads in a rifle cartridge.

Tightgroup is also to fast burning to produce enough gases to cycle the action of your AR.

If you wish to load Extremely Reduced loads with Pistol Powders Hodgdon has some data found here.
http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/rifle

This is Hodgdon's data for Tightgroup.

 Hodgdon...Titegroup....224"...2.200"...Max Charge = 3.1gr...1,064fps...4,000 CUP

Notice the Max load and Velocity of this extremely reduced load.  1,064 fps is about 1/3 of a standard 223 Rem with a 55gr bullet.  This load will not cycle the action and will only net you some very slow velocities.  You will have to load the rifle single shot and keep a sharp eye out for bullets left in the bore.

BTW, don't even think about adding more than 3.1gr of powder to step up the load, the rifle will soon become unfriendly and may decide to just chuck a few parts into your face and hands.

Titegroup is a pistol powder, and should only be used for subsonic rounds.  If you want regular rounds, buy a couple of reloading manuals and use one of their suggested powders.

H335 or Ramshot TAC are my preference, BUT NOT PISTOL POWDER PLEASE unless you want to blow up your AR and possibly kill or injure yourself.

Welcome to Arfcom.

You posted your thread in the incorrect forum and it was moved here to the Reloading Forum.

Read the tacked threads at the top of the page. Look for the 4 part "loading 223" in Tutorials. Also read FAQ's.

Buy and read a reloading manual. I suggest Lyman 49.

First part of manual will explain the tools and components (like powder), and how to reload.

The rest of manual has the loading data you need to be safe and successful.

For 223 you want to use a rifle powder as Tite Group is a pistol powder. Study up on powder burning rates.

Loads can be made with Tite Group, but it's an advanced technique not suitable for a beginner.

After seeing some rifles blow up because of Titegroup, I wouldn't use it.  H335 or CFE223 would work great.

I use 27.5 gr of CFE223 with the Hornady 55gr.

Thanks for all the feedback I didn't mean to put Titegroup in last night what I did mean was AR Comp. Titegroup is what i use for my 40's and 9's

AR Comp might be okay, I haven't tried it, but there is a lot of H335 in the country right now and I know that would be a solid choice for starting.

AR Comp will work fine. Just follow the loading data.

Hornady 9 has data as well as Alliant's website.

h335 or BL-C2. I use both with 55 fmj in all my AR's

I use AA 2230 with very good results.

I've used:
TAC
AA2230
H335
Win 748
BLC-2
WC844
WC846
WC846T
SMP842

I just loaded some of the SMP842 and will test fire them in the morning as this is my first loading of it. All the other powders are ball powders that meter well through my Dillon. All have worked as intended. They go bang and make holes in paper or ring off steel. I have been reloading since 2007 and have yet to work up an accuracy load. I just like to plink.

Soon, I'll be trying some WC845.

Ar comp will work just fine. I bought a 8 pounder at camp Perry a couple years back and I am working up loads this winter. As mentioned, alliant has data on their website.

It is supposed to be similar to rl15 and varget

I just loaded some 69gr with 8208 and I really like this powder.  Kind of like Varget, but easy to meter.

Going to be the 100th person to say 25.3 gr of H335 is swell with 55's of almost any flavor in my rifles.

EDIT- not trying to hijack, but those of you who use W748, whats your 55 gr load for general plinking?

I've used CFE223, Varget and 8208XBR with 55/62gr bullets.

Yep, and why I quit Varget. Same accuracy with a powder that throws very well.

I've only been able to find it at gunshows here for around $28/lb. I can get sub 1" groups at 100yds with 69smks and that powder. Out of a basic PSA 16" midlength.

I use AR Comp. and it works fine for me. It ( as well as CFE, which I just purchased for the first time ) are advertised to be cleaner burning for AR platforms. I am a range plinker, no long distance marksman, but I can tell you this 24.5 g of that stuff under my 55g fmjbt, and I am having a HOOT !
Read load data, always work up from min.,and have some fun.

Benchmark is probably the most reliably available powder specifically designed for the .223 these days....just damned pricey.   Even so, that's what I'm using for my .55 grn fodder right now.   Meters great, very consistant, and  no issues through my AA 556, which tends to be picky on ammo.

I started reloading during the panic. So powder was scarce. I tried AA 2015. I had trouble getting it to cycle both my 20" ARs.

I am now using the VV N530 I bought. This stuff was pricey but at the time the only .223 powder I could find. It is working well with 55gr FMJ-BT bullets.

I have now stashed away 40 pounds of H335. Once I use up the N530 I will go to the H335. I have friends who swear by it. I have to work up a load.

Another good friend uses and likes AR-COMP and TAC.
