I have been reloading for years now for various rifle and handgun calibers.  I have just started reloading for my Marlin 1895ss. I am experiencing a FTF.  I can feed a round one at a time manually with no problem but when loaded into the  tubular magazine the round wont chamber without a slight manipulation of the action.  I am seeking advise from your experiences with the 45/70. I have read where others have trimmed brass shorter and seated the 405 deeper with a lower charge.  Any help would be helpful thank you.

- sized and trimmed the brass per specification  2.095
- using a 405 gr jacketed SP
- 2.550 OAL

I have a .450 Marlin guide gun and I trim .10" off the standard brass (trim to 1.900") and then use the regular crimping groove for that bullet.   Otherwise you need to crimp over the shoulder and it chambers with a good bit more effort.

Here's a shot of what the untrimmed round looks vs the trimmed round:

The one on the right feeds much better than the one on the left.

BTW:   You have to put some kind of ID on this shorter brass so you only use it for these bullets.   I take a die grinder and grind off the "450" off the front of the case.   Makes sorting the brass much easier later.

I have no problems with 405 gr. Remington ammo at 5.545 oal. in a 1895.   Mine will not feed well if the rifle is not held like your getting ready to shoot.  When I unload it laying on its side, I have have to rattle the action sometimes to chamber a round.
