Would like to get into reloading 45 and 10mm. The price im seeing for the lead bullets seems like you wouldnt save that much? $100.00 for 500 rounds. Is it worth it?

You should be able to get 1000 or so for $100. Heavier bullets always cost more, more raw material is used. More shipping costs too. Shop around for better bullet prices. I don't know anyone selling 500 bullets for $100, Laser Cast is probably the most expensive and very hard.

Thanks, that sounds more like it. So leads ok just harder to clean than the jacketed?

Depends, do you shoot indoors?  If so you'll need to use jacketed bullets.

I shoot mixed, both indoors & outdoors, so I only use jacketed so I don't have to worry about what ammo I grab.

Mostly outdoors....i see the lead bullets cheap but where the best place to get the jacketed..I looked through the tacked threads but didnt see anything

Went to the local gun shop to see about getting into reloading and they sold box of 500 fmj jacketed for $100.00 I ddint see any brand name just white cardboard box, I figured thats not worth reloading at that price

.

I shoot on my own land would there be any concern about lead and well water?

Is there any way for the lead to come in contact with your water source? It took years for me to convince a friend he should have an established backstop. Now all of his bullets end up in a dirt mound he dozed behind his target holders. Establish a shooting range with an impact area instead of launching bullets willy nilly every outing. This will go a long ways toward containing the lead in a general location and providing a quality backstop.

Shop around. Powder Valley, Widener's, Graf's, Mid South Shooter's Supply, Cabelas, and at least a dozen others have jacketed bullets for sale. Hornady and Nosler sell bulk packs at good discounts. Lead bullets are always cheaper because it's easier to make them. If you buy premium bullets your cost savings is much greater than using cheaper "fmj's" ect. Compare your reloading cost vs. store bought to see what I mean. 1000 Speer Gold Dot's loaded at home is expensive. Buying them at retail is astronomical!

Im not sure how big the well underground is or if its near where I shoot. Im looking at reloading just for target shooting and maybe IDPA, USPSA. so the cheaper the better. Does the lead cause any problems in a 1911 gun?

I load and shoot MBC bullets by the thousand. Leading has never been an issue. MBC sells Lewis Lead Remover kits at cost. I have one and it takes no time at all to clean a barrel like new.

Thats good news. Dont know much about reloading as you can tell. Is there a certain type bullet that I should look at in the 230 grain rnge that feeds betetr in 1911?

Rainer precision has some relatively cheep copper plated bullets for .45. midway has 185 grain HP's from them on sale for $60+ shipping.

Look around locally.  I have two different local sources for cast. 45 for$ 70/1000.  That puts cost to reload at about$ 5-$5.50/box.

What runs well in my 1911s is MBC's tall truncated 200 grain lswc. You can buy 1000 of those for under 75.00. Also run MBC's 185 grain lswc and 185 grain bnlswc. All good feeders. Have not tried MBC's 230 grain.

Is it better to have adjustable sights or will the lighter bullets hit close to combat sights?

As for lead bullets and cleaning the barrel... At the low velocity of .45ACP, GOOD cast bullets, with good lube won't really deposit lead, or if you're unlucky, will only do so to a minimal extent.

Oregon Trail Lazer Cast 200 lead Semi Wad Cutters work great  5.2 grain of W231 makes a sweet target load

You can buy Laser cast 200gr Lead SWC's at Cabela's for $53 per 500. It's not extremely cheap, but goes to show you shouldn't pay more than $100 per 1k for lead.

You should also be able to find 230gr FMJ in the $130-$140 range if you look for it (I don't have any links handy at work).

Personally, I used 5.0gr of Unique under Laser Cast 200gr SWCs for the first 1k I loaded. Price came to $180/K after I bought brass, primers and powder.

I like Ranier 230gr TMJ bullets. The lead is fully encased and out of a 1911 and a S&W revolver accuracy is very good.

Wilson Combat uses a MUCH faster powder than that for their "test target" load & you will save even MORE $$ by using a fast powder because you use less of it.

Trap/Skeet clubs often have real deals on 8 lb canisters of the same powders that are suitable for .45

I persoanlly prefer Solo 1000 powder, though Clays would be a close 2nd.  If money was not an issue, I'd use Vihta Vouri N-310.  Avoid Unique at all costs!  I tried it once.  NEVER AGAIN!  Gun was filthy & it was SO filthy that the gun began to malfunction after only 200 rounds from all the powder fowling all over the place; plus unique smoked like crazy, smelled bad, etc.  If you must, at least use bullseye, though I find Solo or straight clays better in EVERY respect.

I was just giving a "for instance". I know all too well what Unique is like (now) and that's why I'm loading with Titegroup

I have used Missouri Bullet Co. bullets in my .45 Colt with no leading problems at all, and I'm about to order some 200 grain SWCs to load for .45 ACP. MBC is the least expensive cast bullet that I have found. I use Titegroup also.

Do you get much smoke with Titegroup and Lead? I ran out of SWC's just before I bought my first bottle of Titegroup and am wondering what it'll be like.

I haven't noticed a lot of smoke out of my Vaquero. I've also fired the same loads out of my 1892 Winchester and I don't remember a lot of smoke out of it either. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get to fire some of those reloads and I will pay attention to how much smoke there is.

Thanks!

I've just got Titegroup loaded behind Berry's plated right now and haven't tried lead since running out of bullets (and using Unique). Unique had some pop to it towards max loads, but it was nasty smoky with lead. It'd be nice to hear Titegroup is better, though I fear the hotter burn rate might not help.
