My buddy and I are starting to reload 308 to shoot out of ar-10. My rifle is armalite AR-10 with 20 in barrel 1/11 1/4 twist I believe. His barrel is DPMS 18 fluted heavy barrel. We are looking for some reloading recipes please. My rifle seems to like 175-178 grain bullets in fgmm or hornady.  His seems to like 155-168 grain bullets using hornady or Barnes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

It is generally advisable to work up your own loads rather than asking for recipes. There are some loads that work generally well for a lot of bolt action rifles, but semi-auto rifles are a whole different animal.

I have the same rifle. I shoot 150 Hornady FMJBT with Varget. The accuracy surprised me. Read a book and work up your load.

Same rifle..mine likes Nosler HPBT 168gr with Varget.

Friend has a stainless steel version of same.. He gave me the recipe. Works for both of us.

Reportedly,

The Fed Gold Medal Match for 168 SMKs is 42.7 - 42.8 gr of IMR 4064.
The Fed Gold Medal Match for 175 SMKs is 41.7 - 41.8 gr of IMR 4064.

I can confirm that in my rifle, an Armalite SASS (20" barrel 1x11.25") that the 168 FGMM factory load and my clone reloads shoot very accurately.

I've also had good results with 168 A-Max and Varget but I had to load them kind of hot to get the best groups.  I may revisit those bullets and see if I can find an accurate node a bit lower.

I had the best accuracy from my DPMS with 168gr SMK's over 41.5 gr IMR-4895. You will find it is a common load.

Thank you to those that have responded to this post.  I am also new to reloading for the AR-10 and could use the information.  I have found information on Sniper's Hide, although you have to tease through it because most of those boys are reloading for bolt guns, but there are some recipes there.  I also have found some information on Dan Newberry's sight, Practical Riflery dot com.  Let's see if we can keep this thread going.  Germain Salazar has written about loading .308 for tube guns and has some good information, although oriented toward "precision shooting" - Palma and benchy type shooting.

The loads that I use for my Bushmaster BAR10 are;
Hunting, 165 Sierra SBTHP, with 44.4 grains of IMR 4320
Plinking,  150 Sierra FMJ, with 42.7 grains of IMR 4895
With the hunting load, I have taken Caribou out to 490 yards.
I found the 308 to be easy and fun to reload for.  Enjoy, have fun and be safe!

I have a 1999 Armalite AR10A4.  It's being rebarreled right now @ JP Rifles.

However, in the last decade when it was wearing the standard Armalite 20" heavy chrome-lined barrel  I've been very pleased with sub-MOA produced with 175gr SMK Moly + RE-15 in commercial brass.
This load is very close to the the performance of the military M118LR round.
There is no use looking at my recipe as my powder charge is tailored to moly-coated boolits.

However, most will say that approx 43.0 grn of RE-15 will get you where you need to be.

I suggest you use Hornady's "service rifle" .308 data as listed in their most recent manual, the 9th Edition. Avoid full power bolt action loads using slow burning powders.

my new ar308 with lilja 24 barrel loaded to 2.800 oal change oal
I tried some 155 lapua scenars with 42g varget compressed and seen 2620fps avg.
loaded some mr2000 at 49,5g with the same 155's and got 2850fps average.
quite the difference. no pressure signs in my rifle so work up yours.

also I have loaded up some 185 berger juggernauts with cfe223/mr2000/h4895 and xbr8208 to give a try to the heavies.
all loads are close to compressed with h4895 just barely compressed. mo much room in lapua brass with these big bullets.
if I can get them consistent and close to 2600fps ill be a happy camper.

I sure wish we could have a dedicated loading section for ar308/ar10 rifles since they are becoming so popular right now
keep up the post fellas id like to here what everyone leans towards...
