I have been reloading for a cost of $4.40 using Hornady FMJ's to a cost of $5.00 per box of 20 using Sierra FMJs.  The main cost of the reloads is the bullet, does anyone have a supplier for 55gr FMJ's for less than 13 cents per bullet.  At $5 per box using sierra bullets I might as well buy factory ammo, to save $1 per box is almost not worth all the work of cleaning and sizing the brass.  The only nice about reloads is you know what you get.   Boy has ammo and components gone up I need to buy bulk but where?

You can get the Hornady 55gr bullets for around 8c a round if you buy in bulk.  Grafs has them for about 8.5c if you buy 2000, and I know at least Wideners you can get a 6000 box for cheaper.

Doesn't hurt to look on the EE here in the reloading section.  I know ReefRaider had a shitton of 55gr Hornadys, forget how much.

The other thing is you are comparing your ammo to PMC or American Eaglein terms of price.  In reality your ammo, assuming you are reloading pretty well, compares against an 8-10$ box of ammo, for well under the price of the el-cheapo bulk stuff.  If you buy powder, primers and bullets in bulk you can get down into the $3 a box range.

I was just speaking with a long time reloading guy.  He said investment in the gear would be about $500.  The average 223/5.56 (your own brass) is about $0.15-$0.20 per bullet to reload, and all depends on the quantity of bullets, powder and primer you buy.  He advised buying bullets in the 1000 count, primers in the 1000 count, and powder 10lbs at a time for good values.

Your price per round is about right but you really need to buy bullets by 5000ct(or 6000ct for Hornady) with free shipping and primers and powder by the hazmat tag (paid by shipper sometimes) to make it as cheap as possible.

It really starts to add up as you average about $1000K to fill a 50lb hazmat tag and 6K hornady 55gr FMJ's are $460/6K shipped from Wideners right now.  If you get/have a C&R FFL you can get dealer pricing at Graf's which is excellent compared to everyone else if you are buying primers from them as well.  If only powder then Powder Valley is probably the way to go.  Graf's has free hazmat sometimes too.

X-Treme Plated Bullets

1000 count will run you $86 and probably $15 shipping.  That's roughly $100 to your door, or 10 cents per bullet.

Best to buy in bulk and get buddies together as well.  You can also typically find "air pulled" military M193/M855 bullets for cheaper than above.  With some work and group buy action you should be able to get that down around 7-8 cents per bullet.  I'm paying 7.5 cents per bullet through a local group buy each month.
