Slowly starting to gather everything for mass production of .223 so I can plink more often with the buds, and also horde some away for those 8 hour range sessions and rainy days, and Im ditching my drag racing hobby for this....I reloaded around 100 so far with IMR 4895(Started loading x54r and had a couple pounds of this powder laying around) and it seemed to fire fine and no signs of overpressure of out the fired brass.
The main thing im looking for is reliability of the powder/weapon. After some research at the local gun store on what was available and on here it looks like the 8208 XBR is getting some good results on reliability and consistency so I might pick up a 8lb jug of this and a few hundred more primers. I probably need to pick up a good, updated reloading manual so some suggestions on those would be nice as well. |

I really like the 8208xbr in my 223 loads not sure bout others but in 223 topped with 69gr bthp Nosler custom comp are lethal sub moa @100 when I do my part allso works well in plinking 55's if I remember but that powder I only use for target work. I really like the lyman#49 prob my go to manual, the Lee is good as well allot powders listed. and hornady's manual are nice addition. can't have too many manuals.
If your hoarding components to load in large quanities look at bulk buys. for example I only buy primers in 1k box good luck, safe shooting! |

The part in red is how I save money reloading. It is a $1K outlay to fill a full hazmat tag though

8208 is a bit expensive for "plinking" powder since plinking is generally just cheap shooting - but 8208 is great powder. I use it in .308 with sub-moa results and I've not even finished dialing it in yet! Buy your primers in at least 5k lots. For Powder looks for military surplus/pulls - you can often find it for half what commercial powder goes for. Buy projectiles in bulk - like 6k at a time bulk - 1000 rounds seems like bulk till you burn through them in a couple months. My last primer/powder/projectile order for .223 was nearly $1000 - but I should be set for the rest of the year with some SHTF stash left over.

To my way of thinking a 1000 rd box of primers is what you do to try something out. They are really packed in boxes or sleaves of 5K The key to reloading on the cheap is to know what stuff is going for so you will reconise a deal when you see it and then haveing some cash earmarked for jumping on deals in a big way Buy in bulk from the big guys (wiedners, graffs, powder valley )so the shipping and haz mat fees cover big orders. Local gun stores rarely have decent deals on reloading stuff (it is costly to carry a large inventory of slow moveing stuff) but if you ask them for a price on case lots of stuff you might be surprised what some of them will do. A guick search shows a 8lb from sinclair for $149, even with shipping and haz mat that is cutting your powder cost by a third and if you do a bigger order to beter cover the cost of the haz mat your powder cost could be nearly half of what you are paying now. Similar saveings could be had in primers and bullets |

If you're reducung the cost of plinking rounds by reducing powder costs, you're working on the small end of the scale.
80% of the cost of the ammo is the bullet. Reduce the cost of your bullet, and you'll save much more than anything you can do with powder. For plinking, I uses "pulled" milsurp bullets from www.hi-techammo.com. Not the most accurate things, but certainly in the ballpark of cheapest of things. And they shoot well enough. |

Luckily I am a few miles from Whittaker's Guns in KY, most powders after taxes come to 30 bucks for a pound. No hazmat stuff to deal with. As far as plinking, the range I go to often(private) is 420 yards so I guess its more target then plinking. 30 bucks a pound is really expensive, what I can find locally is usually 22-25 dollars. You can find all but the most expense stuff online for 16-21 dollars/pound. You can save even more by buying in 4 or 8 pound containers. For blasting ammo military pull down powder can't be beat if you can find it (WC 844/846). It's the hazmat/shipping that gets you ordering online. To save much you need to order a lot. If you don't want to spend too much you can see if anyone local to you wants to go in on an order with you and split the delivery cost. |
