So they made them with a 6 round magazine, which meant the barrel lug had to be further out, so you can’t swap barrels, but other than that, is there any downside to owning one or having one? I’ve got some regular ones with the +2, but may have a chance to pick one up locally for a good price. Just wanted to make sure it was only the barrels that are different, all other parts should be the same. Thanks in advance. |

I am personally disappointed that I was not aware of that model. Professional pride. I would probably buy one if I stumbled into one. Not that I need another shotgun, and not at a collectors premium price for sure! I am partial to Speed Feed stocks, however... that speed feed pistol grip stock is the most awkward and ugly pistol grip stock I have ever seen or used! |

I'm a 870 addict, so I had to have one in my herd. I fitted it with a M-4 type telescoping stock & it is a very compact package. The extended one piece magazine tube & thus further forward placement of the barrel lug are "the difference". A Tactical is factory 6+1 due to the extended one piece tube. A standard 870 with a +2 extension = 6+1 Bigger_Hammer  Edited to add photos: The Tactical is "Express Matt Blued". The Police Magnum is "Parkerized". (IMHO Parkerized is superior against rust) The Tactical had the late production "dimple magazine tube with a twist lock". I put a Wilson Wave Washer on it (Just In Case). Tactical has a synthetic trigger guard. Police Magnum has steel trigger guard. (IMHO the Steel has superior strength) I don't know that very many "Tacticals" were made prior to Remington's end of production. They do seem sort of a rarity. Both guns have been fitted with Hogue rubber forearms with side mounts for VERY bright lights at proper thumb activation distance to "Let there be LIGHT!" at "O Dark something". @TX_CA-Cop Mention in thread to you via this post as I could @ in any edited thread. They are an interesting and not very common 870 Variant. I would have really liked it more it if Remington had tapped the top for a possible optics mount option. One of the many cool things about 870s is the fact that you can add / swap parts to get just about anything you need or want. The "Tactical" does have some benefits (one piece magazine tube vs a short tube with a screw on extension. I don't know for a fact, but my gut tells me not having a joint on the magazine tube joining two parts would lessen opportunities for snags or failure. Remington was making a metal sleeve you could 'drop down' the exterior of the 870 Tacticals extended magazine tube that would provide a support point & allow use of "standard" 870 barrels. I bet there are others out there offering similar Attached File Attached File Like ARs, lot and lots and lots of ways to customize & configure a 870 to be whatever you want it to be.  Bigger_Hammer

My best pistol shot was with a HiPoint at 130 yds, but you'll remember the target was 5' tall. Just keep in mind if you break an ejector on those out of production shotguns, you'll need to buy the replacement kit that sets a bolt on the left side of the receiver, that might lower the value of your collection a bit. The top one came with the extension from the factory. The bottom one is a 20Ga youth model with additional slug barrel.

The extended one piece magazine tube & thus further forward placement of the barrel lug are "the difference". A Tactical is factory 6+1 due to the extended one piece tube. A standard 870 with a +2 extension = 6+1 Bigger_Hammer Edited to add photos: The Tactical is "Express Matt Blued". The Police Magnum is "Parkerized". (IMHO Parkerized is superior against rust) The Tactical had the late production "dimple magazine tube with a twist lock". I put a Wilson Wave Washer on it (Just In Case). Tactical has a synthetic trigger guard. Police Magnum has steel trigger guard. (IMHO the Steel has superior strength) I don't know that very many "Tacticals" were made prior to Remington's end of production. They do seem sort of a rarity.
