I was recently given a rifle. It says US Remington model 1903 on the reciever. Serial is 323XXXX. The barel is stamped R A with a bomb burst and the date 8-42. It has the straight stock and the 2800 yard rear sight. The metalwork & stock are in excellent shape. It has a 4 groove barrel with a bright bore. It has AAP on the left side of the stock, a P behind the triggerguard and an A in front of the magazine floorplate. Can someone give me a rough estimate of the value of this rifle? Thanks, DAVE

Depends...is it an 03A3, an 03A1 (cut for the Pederson device), or just an 03?

Does it have a star-guaged barrel (a star engraving on the muzzle crown)?

Anywhere from a couple hundred to a fair bit more..

Aside from the serial # range of those unsafe to shoot, any '03s I see at funshows go for $450 & up in decent condition.

Its an 03, no star engraving to be seen.  No stamped hardware, everything looks machined. The reciever is a gray green.  The rest of the hardware is best described as dark.  It could be called brown or gray black.  I was curious because I`ve seen a lot of Remington 03-A3`s but this is the 1st 03 I`ve seen from Remington.  I was told once that they made few 03`s before switching to 03-A3 production.  Thanks for the input, DAVE

I paid $507.69 after tax a few weeks ago at a show for a Remington 03A3 which I would say is in very good condition. At the time I knew very little about 1903s and nothing about the price of them. Total impulse buy and I'm happy with it. Have only fired a few rounds through it from a standing position but they were all on target

Price for a not quite correct Remington 03 should start around $ 400-450 depending on originality and condition.
Having the correct [RLB] cartouched Remington stock would bump the price up considerably.
AA P is " Augusta Arsenal " and is a rebuild mark .

Remington made some M1903 rifles at first. Then they found a way to utilize cheaper to make stamped parts in not critical areas, ie. the trigger guard, barrel bands, etc. They also stopped milling the grooves in the rear sight base. This model was refered to as the M1903Modified, although I'm not sure the "Modified" moniker was ever officially adopted. I think it was more collectors who use it.

Then Remington went all out and use stampings and a new rear sight to come up with the 03-a3.

It sounds like you have one of the M1903's Remington first made. It might still be a "modified" M1903, though. Can you post some pics?

I really don't know the value of the different models though.
