| Don't know if this is the right place for this question but I am having a hard time removing a Spikes gas block on my AR. It has a set screw at the bottom and a pin running left to right or vice versa underneath the barrel. I can not get the pin out to save my life. Don't know if the pin is tapered and if so not sure which way to drive it out. I placed some WD-40 on it to let it soak overnight hoping that will help. Any suggestions? Thanks |
| Put it in the freezer overnight if all else fails. Colt sight housing pins are put in by DNA radiated freak gorillas with some sort of supernatural genetic strength that we mere mortals can't oppose. I've had to use a hydraulic press to get those things out, so I can empathize. |

hit it on the small side....if you cant tell a difference then it most likely not tapered Quoted:

Make sure you aren't dealing with a tapered pin. . If it is tapered which direction does it go? hit it on the small side....if you cant tell a difference then it most likely not tapered This... |

Ok....since I just did this...twice in fact tonight....with a BA Hanson series 10.3" BLK barrel. Barrel came with a pinned low pro gas block and set screws.
Anyway...determine the smallest end if you believe it to be tapered and tap out with at least 8oz brass hammer. Then using what I found to be so far the most useful bench tool as yet which is Brownells large sized bench hockey puck armorers block. This block will become your best friend. It made the whole unpinning and re-pinning of the gas block incredibly easy...even for me. The other bench tool that arrived today to complete my build was Wheeler Engineering Delta Series Upper Receiver Vise Block Clamp. I have had the Magpul Bev block and sold it. Just did not keep the upper as steady as I would of liked. This Wheeler clamp made installing barrel nut very easy and the AAC flash hider torqued down fairly easy as well. Where the Bev block lost me was when the upper would get real squirrely and I felt like I needed another hand or two to hold the upper and block in place...while I am trying to torque flash hider. |
