I picked up a MAK90 and a previous owner must have been a total moron and drilled holes in the receiver for some sort of scope mount. Im wondering if it can be repaired to the point where you'd never know the holes were there and what it may cost. I'm thinking an hour or 2 to prep, tig, finish the welds ($75-150). Re-blue the whole rifle ($150). Finally, etch the Norinco emblem back on ($75). Am I in the ballpark here?

| Your pricing is a bit low. Any gunsmith that is worth it, will be $80-90 hr. To make that "look" like it never was done (from the outside) I would charge between 2-3 hrs for tig welding and clean up. Bluing is $270- you are looking at re bluing the whole gun. Stripping the whole gun, de greasing, prep for blue, bluing, oil bath and hope that there is no residual oil that leaches out during bluing. Engraving is $90-135 depending on what is needed, and trying to redo the original, in that same spot. if it was mine, I would have it welded up, cleaned up to look good on the outside and Cerakote it. Save yourself the agro of trying to "restore" it. Have it look good and have a ton of fun with it. JMHO |

Three, fake trigger head type, short shank studs via a lathe that can be pressed in to close up the holes, some super black cold bluing to black up the stud heads and scratch marks on the receiver side, and you done for less than $10 if you do the work yourself.
As for tig welding the holes shut, your not even close in smithing price. Between tig'g, then grinding to get the fill welds to flush out, your in the $200 range, them would still need to bead blast and re-parkerize the rifle afterwards to get a color match for all the parts. |
