I haven't even fired a new black M1A standard and noticed what looked like a scratch running parallel to the barrel, down the top of the handguard. Upon closer inspection, it was obviously a split. WTH

So, I start looking around for a black replacement. Can't find one anywhere. Not on Springfield's website and Brownells says it's discontinued by the manufacturer.

What am I missing here?

I'm going to try this. Might take along time to even get a response but I want one exactly similar to the black one that came with it.

You can always get a standard brown and paint it black. I have a 1993 standard in synthetic stock and the hand-guard was originally brown.

Is SA Inc. still using USGI synthetic stocks and handguards? If so, it's probably a painted GI handguard.

Are there good aftermarket upgrades? Slotted/Vented? Anything other than dropping like $400 on Troy's rail

Don't know if they are still selling GI. Probably not. Wouldn't hurt to give them a call. These folks have them in stock:

Look under "stocks and parts"

I'm not looking to buy a stock, I'm simply pointing out that for many years, SA Inc. used repainted USGI synthetic stocks and handguards. If the OP has one of those stocks, he could just buy a G.I. handguard and paint it black. I don't know if SA Inc. found another source for their synthetic stocks, or if they are still using G.I. stocks.

The GI ones are somewhat brittle.
