I need some help with my MSAR STG556. When I was removing a 6" side rail, one of the springs inside the mounting studs came out along with the screw. Is there a trick to getting these springs back into the receiver stud?
Thanks. Steve |

Dave sent me some spare helicoils when I did the same thing as you. I went to AutoZone when the manager said that I could borrow a helicoil installer off of the shelf. It saved me from buying it and then returning it later.
All you have to take in is the receiver if you are worried about someone calling the police on you for packing in a rifle to the local auto store. |

Mcmaster Carr has the helicoils for $4 per 5 (size 1/4x20, not sure of the depth on the side rail, 0.375" on the top mounting) and an economy helicoil insert tool for $20.
Two things- make sure the barrel is out, because if you overinstall you will have to thread it the whole way through. Second, you will have to find a way to break of the 'winding tang', you can *theoretically* use the barrel as an anvil and hit it with a small chisel. You may also be able to break it off with a pair of needle nose pliers. But yeah, better yet, take the stripped receiver to an auto parts store and likely they can do it for you- they will have the right tools and some experience. |
