I am a brand new reloader as of today.  I  got my Redding Big Boss press and other equipment bolted to my workbench and sat down this evening to try and learn the ropes.  I've having a few problems.  I'm trying to use a full-size resizing die to reload 9mm, and when I run the case into the die, it only resizes the top half of the case.  The die is touching the shell holder, and the primer is dropping out cleanly.  So I've got shiny 9mm cases that bulge out halfway down.  Solution?

sounds like the die is adjusted right, touching the shellholder.  I''m thinking the entire case except the part that's covered by the shell holder is being sized but the bottom half was already in spec and didn't need to be sized.  Get a Dillon 9mm case gage to make sure the sized brass is ok or use  your pistol barrel

That was my thought at first, but it's once-fired brass that I won at a shooting match.  No way is it in spec.  It needs to be resized, but the die is only resizing the top half.  There aren't even marks on the bottom that show that the die is contacting the bottom in the same fashion as the top.

Wipe off the lube, and drop the sized case in your pistol.

If it chambers, it is sized enough.

You won't see sizing marks all the way down the case.

Like they said.  That's normal.  If it chambers in your barrel you are good to go.

Okay, thanks a lot.  I'll give that a try in the morning.  I'm just a bit unsure of myself at this point, and I don't want to make a mistake that will cost me a gun and a few fingers.

It's good to be cautious when you are starting out.

Any more questions just ask.

All we require in return is an after range post when you shoot your first handloads.
