I really like the vest setup with the bicep armor, yet most of the sites selling it say RESTRICTED under the item. Why is that?

Even though it is perfectly legal to own, a lot of dealers are real asshats when it comes to selling armor to civies.  They don't want it traced back to them if someone pulls another North Hollywood Bank Robbery-type scenario.  It is more about covering their own asses, when a simple waiver would suffice.

I believe some localities have ordinances prohibiting private ownership of body armor.

IIRC, in New York, it is illegal to wear body armor while committing a crime.

I think most everywhere has enhanced sentencing or a new crime for wearing body armor during the commission of a felony. Georgia Does. But we also have enhanced penalties for committing aggravated assault with a firearm rather then a bat. Is it any different?

First the government wants to take our guns, then they want our body armour. In California you even need a permit to buy pepper spray.

Makes a man wunder, huh?

Yeah.. Or they could be reserving first pick for US forces who are currently finding an increasing need for such item..

US forces are issued their body armor and not allowed to use personally purchased plates/armor.  The days of soldiers walking around in their own CIRAS and RAV are long gone.

I have heard that a lot of dealers will be dropped by their insurance carrier (or their rates would go through the roof, eating up any profit they might have made) if they sold body armor to civilians.

So how does one get around it? Because I know not everyone here is Military or LEO, and I know some own body armor of some sort.

I believe it's illegal to commit the crime also.

What kind of insurance? I was not aware that most dealers had any insurance for, say liability?

Has anyone tried ordering it over the phone and just say "yeah, I'm a cop"?

Those that do have those restrictions require you to fax/mail in copies of your creds.

I believe bulletproofme.com will sell bicep protectors to anyone. DBT requires creds. The biggest difference between the two is DBT have rifles plate inserts and level III soft armor. There are other differences as well. BPM's have no external MOLLE or velcro and them seem rather large compared to the DBTs.
Bulletproofme's

DBT's
