| I have a revolver 617 that I just replaced the old worn out hand with a new one. The problem I am having is that now that I have replaced the hand the hammer is extremely stiff when cocking the gun. The timing is spot on but the hammer is a bear to pull back. This is the first time I have replaced a hand and need some advice. Thanks. |

The hand in a S&W works on the thickness of the hand, NOT on the length.
Possibly the hand is too thick and this is causing the action to have to press too hard on the ejector ratchet, increasing the trigger pull. This is ONLY a guess, which is all you can get without being able to actually see the gun. If the thickness is not the problem, you'll ruin the hand and wind up with bad timing again. To be sure of what you're doing, and to get it done right, I recommend spending a few dollars to buy the Jerry Kuhnhausen shop manual on the S&W revolvers. These manuals were written as training aids for new gunsmiths. These manuals cover ALL gunsmithing on the guns and show how the FACTORY puts a gun back into specification condition. These are the best money you can spend if you own a S&W. These are one of those things that are WELL worth the price and shows everything from proper disassembly and reassembly, and how to fit all parts to factory standard. http://www.brownells.com/search/index.htm?k=shop+manual&ksubmit=y |
