The guy in the pix w/ the basket in his hand has a kick a** camo job on the FAL slung over his sholder.

The only thing that would grab your eye is the mag hanging out of it.

Thanks for the pix's

I remember SOF magazine in 1977/78. I first started buying it then and always read the articles from the Rhodesian war. I knew right then I wanted to be an infantryman.  My plan was to get training from the US Army and become a merc. Okay. big dreams. I did get the training, and a wife, and a kid.... So much for the rest.

I got the FAL, the training, jump school, air assault training.

Somehow, being over 40, it lost it's appeal....

Grunt work is a young man's game.

Still brings back memories. Too bad about Rhodesia.

You think that cammo job is good? In that same picture, look at the third guy from the left. Notice what his right hand is resting on?

Frederick Courteney Selous D.S.O.
1851 - 1917

Big Game Hunter, Adventurer, Explorer, Pioneer, Scout

“Mighty hunters, Dutch and English, roamed across the land on foot and on horseback, alone or guiding the huge white-topped ox-wagons; several among their number wrote with power and charm of their adventures; and at the very last the man arose who could tell us more of value than any of his predecessors."

“Mr. Selous is the last of the big game hunters of Southern Africa; the last of the mighty hunters whose experience lay in the greatest hunting ground which this world has seen since civilised man has appeared herein.”

Theodore Roosevelt
The White House
May 23, 1907

That is so funny. I missed it totally. I thought it was an instructor and he wasn't packing. He was just teaching a class. Of course, in Rhodesia, you carried HEAT everywhere. I should have known that.

Great pics. I miss those days.

I believe that is an attempt to sterilize the rifle's nation of origin (South Africa's crest were removed).

Are you sure the bearded guys in the third pic aren't maybe Portuguese from Angola?

Well, I got the picture from a website dedicated to documenting the Rhodesian War....so I have to assume they are Rhodie troops.  Possibly mercenaries though.....
