As ammo is starting to get a bit more plentiful again, I was looking at the Rio buck that is available.  Particulary, I am looking at the 2 3/4" 9 pellet, full power.  Has anybody used it much?  Any experience with it?  Would like to hear opinions.  Thanks, Hatr

I would pattern it in you shotgun... the Rio reduced recoil OO buck 9 pellet did not group exceptionally symmetric in my 21" Light Modified choke

It's ok, not the best, not the worst.

Shot a lot of 00 and #4 RIO when I first got my M12 riot gun.

Really depends on what your intentions are for it.

More just for "stock up" ammo, and maybe hd/sd.  Might use it for exterminating some piggies now and again.  I am pretty sure, its not the top shelf stuff on the market, given the price.  But is it fairly decent for what you are buying, should have been what I asked.

@Madcap, what kind of patterns did you get out of it?  At what ranges?  Thanks again guys, Hatr

It's worth stocking up for sure.

It's been a long time since I shot it, and didn't measure it, but IIRC shooting at B-26 silhouette targets the groups started being open enough to not really get good center mass groups around 15 yards maybe?  Where as speer lawman reduced recoil 8 pellet was still getting a few good CNS area hits even out to 25 yards.

Since I primarily use a pump shotgun for HD (Win Model 12 riot gun) I'm a fan of low recoil 8 pellet OO.

Given that, I'm sure a little choke on it would probably extend that distance a bit, would you not agree?  Thanks for the info, I'll be adding to the stockpile.  Hatr

I like it.
Shoots pretty well in my Mav 88.

I like the Fiocchi low recoil buck as well as the S&B low recoil.
For 4th of July, keep an eye out on some of the web sales from Sportsmans Guide. They had free shipping for Memorial Day. And not too long ago, they have 250rds of the S&B for $100.
Aim has Rio on sale, but need to put in their email reminder since they are out. I passed when I got a reminder a month ago since I had just ordered some.
SGAmmo also has good deals on shotgun. For me though, the shipping usually is what kills it.

Same results I had.  20" modified, it was very asymmetric.

I bought 250 rounds of full power buckshot and they pattern well at HD ranges of 5 , 7 and 10 yards.  I have probably gone though 200 rounds so far. The cycle fine from my pump and semi-auto shotguns.

I got tons of it. Low recoil & full power. Good range ammo.  Doesn't shoot as well as the Ranger or Federal SD ammo, but It's just like any regular 00. It will get it done if needed.

I bought a case of it last year and realized that its not a true 2 3/4 it is slightly longer and my remington 1100 hated it.  It would not cycle more than two shells ever.  Also since it is a little bit longer I lost shell capacity.

Had similar problem in that it would not fit in my shell carriers for 3-Gun.  Estate Brand is starting to show up here in MO WalMarts for around $20 for box of 25.  I've never had a problem with Estate Brand for practice/3-Gun.  It does flash alot more than Hornady TAP or Winchester Ranger/Mil-Spec, so I don't load it for defense.

It works in my Remington model 11.  Its an old shotgun (almost 100 years)

Here it is with its Remington model 10 brother.

I've had good luck with the Rio buck and bought many cases of 00, and #4 buck when it was 99 cents a box of 5rds.  It seems to go bang every time, is consistent and patterns OK.  Not as tight as Remingtion or Winchester commercial buffered buck loads in the same gun, but close enough that I wouldn't say it doesn't dissuade me from using it for home defense or hunting.  Within 25 yards its all very good.  Seems to hit hard and had no trouble shooting through a solid Oak door at 25 yards. (left over from a friends renovation project of his 1900 home - door was not worth salvaging)

I use it in a variety of guns and they pattern slightly differently. In all the shotguns I've tried it in (about 10 or more so far) - I have had zero malfunctions or misfires.  Most of my shotguns except theSaiga, 870 and the Mossberg are older (pre 1950)  No problems at all.

Don't get me wrong,   I'm certain Federal flite control does better - but the price is much higher. Rio is good enough for range and most use you require buckshot for in my opinion.
