The local Big-5 got a .44 mag version in that I was finally able to inspect and I can't say I was impressed.
The wood to metal fit was poor w/ 1/16th in. gaps in some places, and while the bluing was ok. the flat areas of the receiver had a very "wavy" surface like they had been over-ground and buffed. The worst thing was the little "safety" switch that looked like a complete afterthought and that I afraid would pop off if touched. Is this atypical for Rossi ? At $549.00 I expected a little better. |

That's why we all say "Don't buy unless you can inspect it." The QC seems to be hit and miss. If you get a good one, they are very nice rifles. |
| My Ranch Hand ($350 barely used from a LGS) and 20" carbine (off Bud's for $450 shipped) in 45 Colt have been great. I bought the 20" sight unseen online. Rossi has a lot of cosmoline in the action and on the surface which makes the action not feel so great or finish look so good until a proper cleaning. The safety can be removed and plugged by either reversing and grinding the safety or by buying a plug from Steve's Gunz. |

I bought a 16" .357 from Bud's a few months ago, and was expecting a $420 rifle. I got much more (in my opinion). It was far nicer than I expected, required no action work of any kind, the wood to metal fit was as good as my Winchester 94, and it functions perfectly. It has become the favorite plinking gun, with everyone from me and my wife to my 16 and 12 year old girls wanting to shoot it. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
ETA It was an on-line order that I was not able to inspect, so it's very possible I got lucky. |

I already had new springs, SS follower, aftermarket sights, etc. The finish is better than I thought. The inside was the roughest I've ever seen, even more rough than a war time Mosin. . Filled with shavings and über sharp edges. Did a thorough cleaning, deburring and polishing of contact points. Action now is smooth. Can't believe the difference. Trigger is even better. Rossi in the $400's with a little work is worth it in my book. If you aren't mechanically inclined I say get a better quality gun.
Edit: from Buds as well so no lookie |

I bought a 20" barrel .44 Magnum from a LGS for $350.00 21/2 years ago. The wood to metal fit, polishing of the metal and the bluing was excellent. I sighted it in with mid range LSWC and full power JHC and did not have to adjust the sights., was dead on Everyone that has fired the rifle, from experienced shooters to early teens, is impressed with the accuracy and shootability of it. Nice to see a big grin on the face of a young kid ringing steel plates at 50 yds. first time out shooting "a real gun".
I was so impressed with it I wanted to do something special, so I bought Steve Young's DVD and spring kit and slicked up the action. One of the best new gun purchases I have made it recent years. Would recommend the Braztech/Taurus/Rossi Model 92 without hesitation. |
| I've heard good and I've heard bad....personally I don't buy foreign for that reason and because I like the idea that my "western" style guns are all American. My lever actions are Winchester or Henry only and my single actions are Ruger (although a Colt is next). Plus my Winchester 94 was passed down to me and someday mine will be passed to someone in my family and I want them to be a part of our American history. There's also the fact you know a Winchester or a Henry is going to be a quality gun from the start and will hold its value much better. That said there are some very well made Italian guns being made and although they aren't my preference they may be an option for others. Just do your research and buy smart. |

You realize of course that Miroku in Japan currently makes all Winchester's lever actions.

And Marlins are also American made but the quality on the current "Remlins" is about as spotty as Rossi. |
