Would like some info on the new in wrap SAK barrel that my late father had put on his M1A. I have found where people talk about TRW, H&R, and Winchester but not much mention of SAK barrels.....Thanks, Trapfan.

IIRC they were contract barrels  made by Saco-Lowell out of Maine,

I have one,

SAK medium weight M14 barrels were made by Saco-Maremont in Saco, ME.  The were, IIRC, 1:11 or 1:12 twist 4-groove barrels we had on some M14 DMRs.  Those rifles would shoot LC M80 ball into nice 1" groups at 200 yards all day long from a sandbag/rucksack rest.  They would shoot the A170 spun-nose Federal 168s quite well out to 600.  We were shooting heads on E silhouettes at 600.

Great barrels, one of my all USGI M1As has an SAK barrel and its one of the most accurate that I have.

Superb barrels. Mine is a tack driver.
IIRC,  the godfather of M1A's Elmer Ballance, used SAK barrels on his National Match Devine M1A's.

SAK are some of the best barrels made under goverment contract in my opinion.
They made a standard profile chrome lined barrel, a standard profile NM barrel, and latter in the early/mid 80's made the medium wieght NM barrels. The later medium barrels are not marked SAK, like the two types of standard profile barrels. The medium weight barrels are market with with a manufacture number.
SAK barrels will bring a premium price becouse of there reputation of being accurate.

Thanks for the info guys. Its a standard profile chrome lined G.I. barrel that was brand new in the wrap when first installed. As soon as the weather breaks I'll see how it shoots off the bench with Federal Premium 168gr BTHP rounds. My late father installed a SA Gen III aluminum scope mount and a Burris Signature Select 3-12X44 ballistic plex optic up top. I hope the scope mount is not the weak link in this system.....Have been told to ditch it and opt for a Brookfield Precision steel mount.

A couple of weeks ago I tested an SAK AR barreled LW upper.  M16 surplus and I got a MOA group out of it and several between 1-2 MOA.  I was super surprised.

You are correct ,the scope mount is the weak link . Mine broke , many others too at least you didn't get one of their scopes of a few years ago .
YMMV   rocklock
