I do not currently own a 308 battle rifle. With that said..

There is a SAR 48 local to me. 87 import, 16xx. 5 mags, 4 new in wrapper. Original box. 200 round battle pack. He's asking $1450.

Enlighten me.

Sar-48 is as close as your gonna come to a real deal Imbel FAL rifle in the states.

1450 doesnt sound bad too if he's got magazines and a south african battle pack to throw into the mix.

It appears to have a DSA top rail as well.

SAR48 were solid guns. 200 rd battle pack would rule out SA so maybe Port or Hirt? Id get it but be aware that the FAL salad days (cheap mags, ammo, parts kits) are long over.

If its a complete and original SA 48, not an SA-4800, with the extras that is a good deal. Imbels were FN licensed guns so as close to a real FN as you are gonna see these days for under $2.000.  If the mags are Korean or DSA there isn't much value to them but if they surplus military their value is in the $15 each range and the battle back is probably worth $100 to $125 (not knowing the manufacturer) so the extras might be worth $200.  $1,250 for a real SA-48 is a good deal these days and I would jump on it.  Just make sure it is all original and numbers match.  Get the original top cover too.  If there is a sling and manual with the box that would be ideal. Post some pics if you can and you will get plenty of expert and semi-expert opinions

It would appear he has listed it in multiple places now. Originally it was only in Huntsville.

I saw it, too.

If I wasn't up to my eyeballs in unanticipated expenditures, that baby would already be mine.

Bought 7 guns in the last month.

I'm trying to make the decision I'm sure a lot of people make, a M1A or FAL.

That's not bad. I've seen the 4800 over stamp guns go for $1200.
Some guns were caught in customs but had already been sold to dealers. To keep ATF happy they took off the f/h and Put on a cap, and added the but hole stocks.
But, all the parts were still in the box or sold later as a acurising kits.
I had one that came with all the parts. :-)

I'd buy the 48 yesterday.
M1A prices have been pretty stable over the years.  The M1A is also still being produced, and probably will be for the foreseeable future.
FAL prices, especially for something like a 48 have only gone up.

I agree upon the last posting. Though the Springfield rifles don't cary as many GI parts as of late the M1A is still produced. I've owned both and liked both. I still own the FAL....

I was thinking of selling my FAL to get another M1A.

Until I took the FAL to the range a few days ago and fell in love with it all over again.

If it makes life easier, I stare at a preban M1A that I haven't shot and fantasize about it turning into an FAL.

You want the FAL.
