I  installed  the SA M1A scope mount that they sell for the M1A models. It seems pretty solid....I mean the thing had to be tapped into the stripper clip guide slot & that was very very tight. So my question - Is this a bad mount?

Generally speaking it is considered low end. Soft aluminum. People have had issues with it loosening up and their scope not staying true. I have one laying around and can't really find anyone to take it off my hands. November issue of Shooting Times had a big article on scope mounts for the M1a. Many were listed, but it didn't include the Springfield mount. That has to tell you something. Since you have it mounted already might as well use it. If it starts giving you troubles look into better options  like mounts from SEi, Sadlak & ARMS to name the most popular. All are similar design based off the original Brookfield design offering the best built scope mounts available. Of course they cost a good deal more to.

By having to tap it into the guide slot would tell me it is either off or your receiver is off or both. SAi has been known to be ever so slightly off. I'd suggest then when and if you choose another scope mount to look into Sadlak. They offer a kit to check the measurements of your receiver. It can be bought separately for a small amount of $15 or so. If it meets spec your good to buy what ever, but if it isn't they are the only company to offer a custom fit of their mounts to your receiver and if you bought the kit separate they will discount it on your purchase of the mount. Otherwise the kit comes with the mount. Good deal. Something you should maybe be aware of. you'll need at least a dial caliper to check i, but a micrometer is a bit nicer to have. Hope I helped.
