I currently have 2 AR15's, both regular long rifles w/ 16" barrels... no NFA on either of them.  I would like to have an SBR 9mm upper and an SBR .223 upper.  Would I be operating within the limits of the law to register one of the 2 lowers I have now as SBR then buy an SBR upper in each of the 2 calibers?  When you register an SBR lower do you have to register it to a specific caliber or can it be to multiple calibers?  I called the ATF 2 weeks ago about it but have not heard back from them.

Thanks,

You can register the SBR in a caliber and barrel length. Then in additional description note that you will be using multiple barrels in specified calibers and lengths that you want to put down.

Since you will have multiple upers for one SBR lower I would suggest you engrave the S/N and manuf. info on the receivers and barrel assy. so intent can be shown that they are to match up with the registered lower.
