Would there be any advantage in buying an AR lower that is already registered as an SBR from my dealer or just buying a plain lower and doing a Form 1? |

The only advantage I can think of has to do with what markings you want on the gun. If you Form1 a gun yourself, you have to engrave your name/city/state. With a Form4 gun, it may have a "real" manufacturer's name (like Colt or DPMS). Functionally, there would be no difference. Personally, I don't care one way or the other that my SBRs have my info on them. It seems Form4s tend to go through a little faster than Form1s, but that may have changed with NFA Branch's move to WV. |
my latest form 4 was approved in 86 days after pending where as my latest form 1 was approved in 14 days...all individual...i guess it depends on your examiner and their backlog. |
garrett summed it up ...so basically i would do a form 1 ...but since i wouldnt sell it then it wouldnt matter to me with the engraving... if you want a original lookin sbr with absolutley no extra marking on the lower then i would suggest a factory sbr. now if your dealer doesnot have it in stock , expect a month or so extra wait while he gets it in. and if it is sbr'd by someone other than say bushmaster then they will have their company info on there here is a example....say lee minor from lrm registers the sbr...then it will have this on the side of it lrm firearms talahassee ,fl hope i helped and didnt confuse ya |
Plain lower + form 1 will probably be less expensive and faster. No real advantage to a factory SBR lower other than markings. |
One thing that most folks don't know. That is if you go to a Class III manufacturer and have them build or register the lower, if anything was to break. You can then take it back to the Class III manufacturer and have them "build/manufacture another one with out another tax stamp or wait. I have had all my AR SBR's done that way, just in case anything was to break, I can get it replaced quikly and with less paperwork, money spent, and time wasted. If you have a good manufacturer, they will let you pick your serial number. Not a big thing, but it is nice to get what you want. Hope this helps and good luck with your next build!![]() Edited for grammar
