What can a SBR do that a 14.5" or 16" barrel can't? Why should I spend $200.00 and the paperwork hassel on a 11.5" barrel upper? I am just a civilian and have 2 14.5" (16" with pinned flash hider) ar's and I am trying to justify a new purchase, should a SBR be it?
Thanks, BIll edited to note barrel length of my 2 ARs |
| Let me ask you a question. You have two 14.5's. Unless you have the paperwork for a SBR, you have permanently attached flash hiders to bring overall barrel length to 16 inches. So why didn't you just get true 16 inch barrels, which means a little more velocity and a little less blast and flash? |
|
an SBR to me, is to reduce the OAL of the rifle to a comfortable compactness. It's easier to carry, doesn't bang into stuff as much, etc.
if you don't need to have an ar15 and have some money, get an AUG or another bullpup. You'll get full ballistics and an OAL that's shorter than feet of

Why not? Exactly. - Fun / badassedness / cool factor (see below for real reasons) - Lighter / shorter / more handy in tight spaces - TAP 75gr 5.56 and an 11.5" barrel is plenty of velocity for the effective range (for reliable fragmentation) of most civilian SHTF situations, i.e., home-defense. A Colt commando or BCM 11.5" is the perfect start. |

Because a 16" w standard flash hider is still an inch or so longer than a 14.5 with a pinned 1.5. Dont forget 16" barrels look gay in the carbine gas, M4 setup and one inch of "extra velocity" does NOT matter in a carbine.

Because a 16" Ar-15 is basicly a FUDD gun...lol
seriously...go short and you'll never go back. Once I had one, I had to turn in 5 more stamps to make EVERYTHING I own a SBR. Everything is better SBR......6 inches of barrel past the guard looks retarded and a half. |

Guns with short barrels are better for home defense. Swinging a 16" carbine around in a house isn't hard, but a 10.5" is much easier. ^ This is it. I personally don't like 5.56 out of anything less than a 12". The SBR'd AR truly comes into it's own in a pistol caliber configuration. SBR'd barrel lengths + suppressors = very quiet. And stil handy indoors. - my $.02 |

Because when I add my 5" suppressor onto the end of a 16" barrel it get's really awkward to sneak up on stuffed animals in my house mom's house late at night. In a suppressed rifle, the round is less likely to go sonic in a short barrel gun.Only if you are using sub sonic ammunition. |
|
my 11.5" SBR AR gives me 2500 FPS with reloads and 2600-2700 FPS with factory blasting ammo.
not too bad in my book. add in the good accuracy and the SBR is just plain and simple, the way to go 200 yrds and under. before i scoped my SBR i nailed a crow at 250 yrds with standard iron sights while kneeling... |

So I can do this... http://personal.visualitymedia.com/personal/6_8/psd_flat.jpg That's an 8" barrel in 6.8x43 which pushes out 110gr bullets that fragment out to 150 yards and will still knock you on your ass at 300 yards. Who makes the small handguard on the front of the bottom rail? |

If you mean go supersonic... uhhh all 5.56 ARs go supersonic... even itf it had a 5" barrel it would be supersonic. |

It depends on your altitude and the ambient temperature ( the air density determines the speed of sound, but it is typically between 1050 and 1150 fps). |

I agree... Why get a SBR when you can simply get a MG and put a short barrel on it instead! Because after owning an M16 for long enough, you'll acquire so many sub-16" uppers that an SBR lower becomes useful as a backup host or for accuracy testing. Or just for taking mud-crawlin' without risking a $15k lower.
Besides, sometimes buying an SBR is the cheapest way to get a upper to fill out your MG upper collection ... I bought a 6933 primarily to get the upper, and the factory SBR'd lower was a close-to-free bonus! Then again, I also bought a complete 6920 just to get an upper to use in non-NFA states ... so maybe I'm not the poster child for "reasonable purchases."

As usual.. I have to agree with you. |
